THE NATIONAL UNITY MOST OF US SEEK WILL NOT HAPPEN ANYTIME SOON, MAYBE NOT EVEN IN OUR LIFETIME, BUT WE'RE ON THE WAY THERE

There are two kinds of national leaders: a head of government tasked with getting things done, and a head of state who's basically all about pomp and circumstance.

Meanwhile, there are two kinds of Filipinos: the ones who live comfortable lives despite everything, and the ones who don't.

Uncomfortable Filipinos need a Head of Government more than a Head of State. Pride isn't edible, and they have mouths to feed.

On the other hand, there are two kinds of comfortable Filipinos:

First, the sufficiently comfortable Filipinos who would like a government that, despite its heavy flaws, can at least appear to be trying its best to make things better, regardless of whether it succeeds in doing so or not.

An incompetent government, as long as it can portray itself as competent, is all they want and need. After all, these Filipinos by definition enjoy sufficient comfort regardless of the circumstances.

All these Filipinos need -- and all they actually want -- is a head of state and nothing more.

Second, there are insufficiently comfortable Filipinos who are not content with mere appearances, those who want a government that, despite its rough edges, actually gets things done.

They do not care about pomp and circumstance, especially that which borders on smoke mirrors. Yes, it'd be nicer if a government has good marketing, but they're more interested about what's in the box than how the box is wrapped.

In a poor country like ours, where most are either insufficiently comfortable or downright uncomfortable, most Filipinos look for a leader who gets things done. Having a smooth-talker is just a bonus, considering the dearth of choices.

Meanwhile, the sufficiently comfortable will never be contented in having such a leader, as that leader offers them something they don't really need as much as they need someone they can be proud of based on their standards of decency.

With that said, these three groups -- the sufficiently comfortable, the insufficiently comfortable, and the downright uncomfortable, can be grouped into two:

First, those who want a head of government more than a head of state, which includes the insufficiently comfortable and the uncomfortable.

Let's call this group "The Filipinos Downstairs".

Second, those who want a head of state more than a head of government, i.e. the sufficiently comfortable.

Let's call this group "The Filipinos Upstairs".

The problem that we as a People face right now is the fact the President Rody Duterte, is just one and not both. He, as far as I can see, is an effective of Head of Government, but he himself admits that he lacks the qualities of a Statesman, a Head of State.

Hence, I think it's pointless for us, the Filipinos Downstairs, to convince those Filipinos Upstairs that the government we have today is at the least good enough.

Yes, he is good enough for our needs as Filipinos Downstairs, but he is not what Filipinos Upstairs look for. Those Upstairs look for something totally different from what those Downstairs look for.

The Filipinos Upstairs who complain about the supposedly increasing divisiveness in society?

Nah, society has always been extremely divided: it's just that back then, they need not mingle with the part of society they don't like unlike today. Blame social media, where anybody, regardless of Net Worth, can pretty much talk to anyone.

Though I was able to put this reality into words just now, I have accepted this same reality long ago. And this is precisely why I rarely get deeply frustrated with any attacks directed against the current President, or against me for supporting him.

Time will come when we, as a nation, will sufficiently unite. But that time will come only when the Filipinos Upstairs outnumber those below.

The National Unity most of us seek will not come anytime soon, it may not even come within our lifetime.

But thanks to this foul-mouthed President who, unlike most of his predecessors, gets things done, we're on the way there, as he lifts those downstairs to the upper floors.

But for now, amidst all the political vitriol, I'll just take solace on my certainty that my conscience and I are on pretty good terms. My conscience isn't perfect but at the end of the day, it's all I got.

I know most of you are with me Downstairs so come May 13th, why don't we help the man who's helping us?

Let's worry about the Filipinos downstairs for now.

Let's worry about the Filipinos upstairs later.
