We visited the Anshei Minsk Synagogue in Kensington Market today. The Anshei Minsk Synagogue is dour on the outside, but a delight on the inside. The Byzantine-style structure, with a deco interior, was completed in 1930 – a step-up from the original 1912 shtibel or small storefront synagogue typical of poorer Jewish immigrant communities of the time. The founders were poor Jewish immigrants from Russia .

Once, this was all water. Thirteen thousand years ago, the hill I’m standing on was the shore of the ancient Lake Iroquois, which filled the basin where Lake Ontario sits now alllll the way up here to Casa Loma.

Today we visited Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church on St. Patrick Street. This is the church that is located beside ILSC church campus. So beautiful !
St. Patrick’s Gothic Church (presently Mount Carmel) was built in 1867 to replace the original wooden Church.
For a century Our Lady of Mount Carmel has been a transient parish for new immigrants. Through the years Italians, Portuguese, Koreans, Vietnamese and Chinese communities have worshiped there. But before then it was the original St. Patrick's parish until it got too small and a new church was built next door, taking with it the name St. Patrick's. Today Our Lady of Mount Carmel is considered the mother church for the Chinese community. It is mostly made up of immigrants from mainland China. Half the Masses are celebrated in Cantonese, the other half in Mandarin with English Mass twice a month for second-generation Chinese.
