"You might think Alexander technique is just another one of those things that people say will change your life dramatically. While this is entirely possible, my experience is that it works in harmony with and significantly enhances other good things a musician may already be doing; it makes everything easier, less tiring, and it encourages rigorous self honesty and healthy questioning within one's arts practice. The possibilities are boundless. What's not to love?"

Anne-Marie O'Farrell, musician and composer, from Dublin, working with Don W**d at the ITM Summer Workshop 2018.

Aingeala De Búrca, from Dublin, is one of the two leaders of the Irish Summer Workshop. She has been teaching ITM Alexander Technique since she qualified in 2007. Aingeala is also a graduate of Don W**d's first Trainer Training course (2012-2016). She is a trainer on the ITM Teacher Training course along with Mary Shorten, Jane Toms, Adrian Bourner and Kate Brailsford. All five will teach on the ITM summer workshop in June.

In 2007, Aingeala began organising workshops for Don W**d in Dublin. She has been one of the organisers of the annual ITM Ireland summer workshop since its inception in 2014 and has also organised and taught with Don W**d at annual workshops in Stockholm since 2016.

Aingeala lives between Dublin and Stockholm where she continues with her primary career as a violinist. As well as playing with professional orchestras, she plays on gut strings with baroque ensembles, and has used her improvisational skills in rock-bands, theatre productions and outreach settings.

Adrian Bourner is an ITM teacher and trainer and will join us to teach at the ITM summer workshop in Cork this year June 24-28.

Adrian is a regular teacher in Ireland since before our first summer workshop, and at this stage is in danger of becoming 'more Irish than the Irish themselves' (which isn't a bad thing of course 😁

Adrian lives in Devon, England. He qualified as an ITM teacher in 2003 and is one of the ITM teachers who graduated from Don W**d's first Trainer training course (2012-2016). Along with Jane Toms, he is one of the team of ITM trainers responsible for the training of ITM teacher trainees. (The second of five trainers teaching with us this summer so far -four of us pictured with Adrian below).

Why study the ITM approach to Alexander's work?

Alexander wrote in his second book that our fixed ideas and conceptions are the major cause of our difficulties. But how to 'unfix' our thinking, when our thinking is the only thinking we know and have done all our lives?? Not easy!!

This is where the ITM Alexander Technique can help. Thanks to two men, FM Alexander and Don W**d, and the life-long commitment and exploration that they both put into this work, we have the means to realise increasing flexibility and freedom in our thinking.

Thanks to Don and the understanding that he gained through his study of Alexander's work, along with his expert and modern knowledge of anatomy, his creative and unique approach to education, we have a powerful means of applying Alexander's tools and principles so we can change our thinking; overcome the ideas and conceptions, the beliefs with which we get in our way and limit ourselves.

With the ITM approach we can 'unfix' our thinking and our movements, to find new ways of living as fully and freely as we desire.

If you would like to learn more and benefit for yourself, why not come to one of our summer workshops this year? All ITM summer workshops are taught by ITM trained teachers and led by ITM Trainers. You can find out more on the ITM website which is posted in our page info.

You can read more about how and why Don W**d developed the ITM in this article.

A MUSICIAN’S EXPERIENCE OF THE ITM ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE by Simon Gore 26/03/2022

This year will be the first year that the ITM Summer Workshops will take place without Don W**d and will be taught instead by ITM Trainers with support from ITM teachers.

In memory of many years of wonderful summer workshops with Don, here is an article written by professional drummer Simon Gore (who has since become an ITM teacher and trainer) in which he tells us of his first experience at an ITM Summer workshop.

Over the years, Don W**d's 'loud American approach' was much diminished and a Hawaiian shirt has not been seen for at least two decades, however Don's highly developed sense of humour remained intact till the end, as did his 'encyclopaedic knowledge of Alexander's writings' and his 'profound insights into how we function'.

From year to year, Don brought his increasing expertise and subtlety of understanding to helping people learn this life-changing work for themselves.

Simon himself writes with ease and humour, and it is a pleasure for us to share his article with you here. Hope you enjoy it!

A MUSICIAN’S EXPERIENCE OF THE ITM ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE by Simon Gore What would you say if I told you there was no such thing as tension and that practice was not important? Well, whether your response is outrage or hysterical laughter I’ve probably got your attention, and that’s just the way Don W**d likes to do things. Welcome to the annual Interactive Teaching...
