While God causes all things to work together for the good of those who love Him, they do not always work together for the good of organized Christianity.

Mistakes were made by sincere men in the first few centuries that led to the hideous crimes committed by the Popes and leaders of the Roman Catholic Church.

Worldly authority was invested in church leaders to protect everyone from serious heresies. This power led to corruption. The real power should have come from the Holy Spirit working among them to serve and lay down their lives for the flock of God.

Clara Barton was a pioneer in the field of nursing who took on a leadership role in the American Red Cross for over twenty years until she resigned in her mid-80s.

Her niece, offering a perspective on how Clara viewed life, shared this wisdom that Clara offered her: "Be always calm, my child. Keep yourself quiet and in restraint, reserve your energies, doing those little things that lie in your way, each one as well as you can, saving your strength, so that when God does call you to do something good and great you will not have wasted your forces and strength with useless strivings, but will be ready to do the work quickly and well - go slowly, my child, and keep ready."

(Author Unknown)
When you are forgotten or neglected, or purposely set at naught, and you smile inwardly, glorying in the insult or the oversight, because thereby counted worthy to suffer with Christ—that is victory.

When your good is evil spoken of, when your wishes are crossed, your taste offended, your advice disregarded, your opinions ridiculed, and you take it all in patient, loving silence—that is victory.

When you are content with any food, any raiment, any climate, any society, any solitude, any interruption by the will of God—that is victory.

When you can lovingly and patiently bear with any disorder, any irregularity, any unpunctuality, or any annoyance—that is victory.

When you can stand face to face with waste, folly, extravagance, spiritual insensibility, and endure it all as Jesus endured it—that is victory.

When you never care to refer to yourself in conversation or to record your own good works, or to itch after commendation, when you can truly love to be unknown—that is victory.

When, like Paul, you can throw all your suffering on Jesus, thus converting it into a means of knowing His overcoming grace, and can say from a surrendered heart, “Most gladly therefore [do] I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake”*—that is victory.

When death and life are both alike to you through Christ, and to do His perfect will, you delight not more in one than the other—that is victory, for, through Him, you may become able to say, “Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life or by death.”* “Death is swallowed up in victory.”*

The perfect victory is to “put… on the Lord Jesus Christ”* and thus to triumph over one’s self.

“In all things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.”*

Paul's prayer in Ephesians 1:17-18:
17 That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:

18 The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of his calling, and what are the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,...

Are We Living In The Last Days?

Anyone who listens to the news these days has reason to wonder about the state of the world and perhaps our own personal safety. For over a century now, many groups of Bible-believing Christians have interpreted the many tragic events as signs that the end of the world is very near. But it might surprise many to know that this belief has not always been the dominant view among Christian scholars. In fact, from the colonial days in North America up until the mid to late nineteenth century a more optimistic view prevailed.

Many of the hymns from that time reflect the expectation that the Church of Jesus Christ would triumph in this world, and that Christ would come to claim that victory in person, not to destroy the world, but to solidify His righteousness, peace and joy forever in His Creation.

This is not heresy. It is based on serious, sound Biblical interpretation and reflection on the nature, power and love of our wonderful God and Savior. While no reasonable person would deny that the nations of the world are in great jeopardy, we know from scripture and history how things can turn around when people seek the Lord.

Could I pose this question? How much faith would it take to accept the fatalistic view that mankind will eventually be destroyed? Even many secular people embrace that idea. No effort would be required either. Just let things continue to go as they have been.

The Lord has not given His people that option. They are called to light up the world with the Good News of Jesus, the Good News of His righteous reign over the earth! Our hope is in Him, and He takes no pleasure in the death of unbelievers. His joy and that of all heaven is when they repent and turn to Him! What can you or I do about the state of the world? We can look unto Jesus for hope and guidance, and serve in what ever capacity He has prepared for you. What ever part He has for you, what ever gift he has given to you, that is the area of your greatest power and effectiveness in Jesus name!
