Sugar in beet roots was discovered in the mid-1700's by a German Chemist - but the oldest known beet, chard, was domesticated in 2000 B.C.E. and grown by the Greeks and the Romans.

The first probable domestication of sugar was by the indigenous people of New Guinea, who chewed on sugarcane stalks.
