Flutists - are you a baroque flutist or interested in learning the baroque flute. If so, you should consider attending Oberlin’s Baroque Performance Institute - June 16-29. I will be teaching the baroque flute class this year and the theme of BPI is “Music of Paris and Versailles, 1660-1760.” This is one of my favorite topics because there is so much fantastic French baroque flute music and this class is an ideal place to learn about the playing styles of this repertoire. Potential composers for our class include, Hotteterre, La Barre, Leclair, Marais, Dornel, and many others. This workshop is excellent for all levels of players, including serious modern flutists who have not previously played the baroque flute. We will loan you a fine baroque flute and by the end of two weeks you will be playing quite well.
The recorder class will be taught by Anne Timberlake and this year includes a new option where one can study solo and chamber music, or take a new path focusing on consort playing.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. [email protected]

Course Description As recently as the 1980s, most classical music audiences, if asked to list composers of the Baroque period, might cite Bach, Handel, Telemann, and Vivaldi before running out of names. Though the works of these geniuses occasionally found their way onto concert programs, the output...

Oberlin's Baroque Performance Institute is coming up again this June. BPI is a great opportunity to immerse yourself in playing baroque music and to learn about style and technique. Lots of wonderful concerts by students and faculty. Christopher Krueger teaches baroque flute Michael Lynn teaches recorder. The topic this year is music from the mid-17thC up to 1715, of most everyone other than France!

Traveling Through the Baroque 1650-1750
International travel and migration is not new to the 21st century. Musicians and composers traveled the world throughout the baroque period. Handel spent time in Italy, Telemann in Paris, Lully was an Italian in France, J.C. Bach and Geminiani were in London. We will study the music created by those affected by the cross currents of their times.
French based conductor and harpsichordist, Skip Sempe, who is a BPI and Oberlin alum, will conduct the faculty/student orchestra in the second week. He will also be working with the harpsichordists in conjunction with our regular faculty.
In celebration of the 275th anniversary of Telemann's death and the recent publication of the newly found manuscript of his Fantasias for viola da gamba, the faculty and students will collaborate on a presentation of the solo fantasies for viola da gamba, violin, flute/recorder/oboe, and harpsichord.
