Generative Design + Sustainability: Parametric Approach for Performance Driven Architecture
With the looming climate crisis, the GD+S course intends to explore the frontiers related to the convergence of architecture and sustainability with the latest technology. It uses non-human computational intelligence and looks beyond human prejudices to find functional and environmentally responsive building designs.
Together we will question the intuitive decision-making for the initial building forms. Using multiple proxy indicators, we will go beyond a few manual design options to compare thousands of building form possibilities. It will be aided by automatised evolutionary processes using multi-objective evolutionary optimisation, allowing the real-time performance evaluation of the generated buildings.
The course will provide a methodology to envisage outside the 3 physical Dimensions by including sustainability right from the early design phase and eventually directing us towards a Net Zero Energy future. The algorithmic process learned will not be restricted to the course problem, rather it can be applied to any location and functional typology by allowing easy adaption to meet specific project expectations.

Binary Blocks: Printing Assemblies with Clay
Humans have been using clay for the last 16000 years.
It has helped shape the first of human settlements, the
first of human objects, the first of utility and even
helped us attain civilization and sanitation. It has help
us manifest our thoughts and shape our stories many
of which were told through clay itself. But what has
made it our medium of expression for thousands of
years is its rudimentary nature and its fascinating
translation of form. Without water it is brittle and
granular, with water it softens and becomes one of the
most malleable materials known, sculpted by mere
hands, and once dried again, it retains the sculpted
shape and develops strengthened properties. With this
new age and new tools capable of Computer Aided
Manufacturing, expressions in clay have taken fresh
approaches influenced by its history, material behavior,
constraints in translation of form and importantly the
advent of precision provided by use of robotic tools.
These experiments have helped us break the
constraint of scale and allowed us to go from tiny pots
to large buildings. This is where the course attempts to
bridge clay sculpting to applications in Architecture
and form finding.
