Did you know that graphemes are the key to early reading success?

A grapheme is a written letter or a group of letters representing one speech sound, or phoneme, such as the "c" in "car," where the hard "c" sound is represented by the letter "c." Graphemes are magical symbols that enable kids to decode and read words with confidence!

Did you know, that the sound /k/ can be spelled as c, k, ck, or ch? That’s phonics! Phonics is the study of the systematic relationship between the sounds we hear in words and the letters that spell them, or to say it more technically, the systematic relationships between phonemes and graphemes.

Why is teaching phonics important? Understanding phonics allows students to "decode." Decoding is the act of sounding out words using letter-sound relationships and patterns in order to correctly pronounce written words.

What is the alphabetic principle? Phonics teaches the alphabetic principle, which is the understanding of the relationship between letters and the spoken sounds they represent. Reading development is dependent on an understanding of the alphabetic principle. This “understanding” allows children to apply these sound-spelling relationships to both familiar and unfamiliar words.

If you want to learn more about phonics and the alphabetic principle, join us on a complimentary seat for our Science of Reading Virtual Workshop. Link in our comments!

You may have noticed we’ve used the term “sight word” differently than how it is used in many classrooms. Many educators use the terms “sight words” and “high-frequency words” interchangeably.

Sight Words are any words that we decode quickly and effortlessly. They are not just words like to, from, the, and is; they can also be words like majestic, subtropical, and encyclopedia. We can typically read these familiar words in less than .20/second or 200 milliseconds, without any conscious effort.

High-Frequency Words are the most common words in print; they make up 50% of the words and read and write. At Really Great Reading, we like to call these words Heart Words because we want students to know them “by heart.”

To learn more about sight words or high-frequency words, click the link in the comments!
