We are so excited to announce that Todd Lawrence will be joining TLC as a Middle School Guide for the 2024-2025 school year!

Todd comes to us with a wealth of experience in education, a passion to see learners thrive in and outside of the classroom, and an easy rapport with learners that makes him a wonderful guide and advocate.

With an additional guide, we'll be able to provide a tailored middle school experience that emphasizes community, project-based learning, and self-direction. We believe these three tenants create a solid foundation for learners to build on as they pursue their educational goals.

Welcome, Todd!

**Keep your eyes on this space as we begin announcing plans to open registration for the fall!**

We are so excited to announce that The Learner's Collective will begin meeting at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Athens on August 7, 2023!

The Unitarian Universalists are committed to social justice, community engagement, and lifelong learning. They are fierce champions of justice, equity, and compassion, and we're so thankful to have found a home in their beautiful space!

Our mission is to prepare learners for their next steps through rigorous academics, relevant, hands-on learning, and apprenticeships. Our learners will cultivate the passion, character, and multiple intelligences needed to thrive in diverse communities and a changing world.

Graduates of TLC will be self-starters. They'll learn to be creative problem solvers that navigate change and disappointment with grit and growth mindset. And they'll be able to communicate across lines of difference so they can work towards lasting changes in their homes, in their workplaces, and in their communities.

The Learner’s Collective uses a badge system in order to track progress and help learners keep track of new skills they’ve acquired. Badges are digital credentials that learners earn by demonstrating proficiency in a particular skill or competency, and are earned by completing a course, participating in a project, or mastering a specific skill.

Learners will work alongside their Guides to create a plan for earning a designated number of badges across multiple disciplines each year, including math, story arts, quests, learner’s library, and leadership. During check-ins, Guides and learners set goals and ensure everyone is staying on track.

Badges are a way of recognizing and celebrating the diverse range of skills and competencies that learners can acquire through self-directed learning, while also providing a valuable tool for evaluating progress and demonstrating achievements.

Want to learn more? Join us THIS SUNDAY for a parent's meeting at the ACC Library from 3-5!

There are many definitions and expressions of self-directed learning, ranging from unschooling and free school models, to traditional schools encouraging self-direction on specific projects.

At The Learner's Collective, we employ a structured model that teaches learners to set and meet goals, identify their learning needs, and create personalized pathways to acquiring new knowledge and skills. Our students will engage in formal learning processes like online classes, while working alongside Guides to set a pace and schedule tailored to their needs.

Ultimately, we believe that when learners are rightly supported and operate within well-defined systems, they are more than capable of directing their own learning.

What to learn more about how our model works? Our second Parent Information Meeting is THIS Sunday 4/23 from 3-5! It will be held at the main library 2025 Baxter St. Let us know if you’re planning on being there!

Stay tuned to learn more about our badge system tomorrow!
