Day 2 -

Day 2 — Teaching Off Trail One late spring afternoon, my better half texted me a link to the listing for what would become our future farm. Once I saw the asking price, I’ll admit I didn’t look into it any further. I texted her back saying she sent me the wrong link. She asked me to take a closer look. When I did, the sti...

When I found out I was going to be a father, an idea came into my head about sharing the wackiness of my childhood to my future offspring. I decided to create 200 stories of 200 words a piece. Feel free to peruse some of these at DADventures (dargatzdadventures.blogspot.com).

With a new year upon us, I thought I’d re-create this creative adventure. Every day in 2023, I intend to publish a 365 word story about life on the farm. Besides rejuvenating my writing career, 365: A Year at the Farm will share insights on the ongoing tales of our family farm, Craneview on Plainview.

This experience is meant to be organic. Every story will connect to our farm. Every story will be 365 words. Every story will be insightful and entertaining (or at least aim to be). I hope you join me on this journey!

Teaching Off Trail: My Classroom's Nature Transformation through Play 08/10/2022

With TEACHING OFF TRAIL's book birthday just over a month away, I am excited to announce that I will be able to present about it at next month's NAEYC Conference in Washington DC

AND

I am in the midst of creating an eLearning course focused on elements within the book.

Have you got your copy yet?

Teaching Off Trail: My Classroom's Nature Transformation through Play Teaching Off Trail describes the transformation of Peter Dargatz, a national board-certified teacher, and public school coordinator, from an anxious assessor and worksheet distributor to a fair and fun facilitator of learning by creating a nature kindergarten while staying in the same public school....

My birthday is only two weeks away. I don't need Dr. Pepper or Peanut Butter M & M's, but buying, sharing, or requesting my book would be perfect.

P.S. I won't turn down Dr. Pepper or M&M's

TEACHING OFF TRAIL hasn't had a new Amazon review in a while. Anyone willing to change that??? :)

08/03/2022

I'm not trying to ruffle feathers or seem like "woe is me," but being a teacher is tough right now. I know many wonderful educators who have left or are thinking about leaving the profession.

I wrote TEACHING OFF TRAIL because I knew I had to make changes to how I worked with kids.

Yes, it is about play.

Sure, it talks about nature.

But above all, it describes why and how schools can make transformative changes to help children.

If you know a teacher or a parent or administrator who is in need of a "pick me up," please consider picking this book up and seeing why more people need to begin TEACHING OFF TRAIL.

This might not be all that impressive, but this is the best Amazon ranking I've seen yet for Teaching Off Trail.

Buy the book. Tell your friends. Leave a review. Please and thank you.

Play on! — Teaching Off Trail 12/02/2022

If my class isn't exploring the trail, there's a good chance we are playing.

And that's OK.

Play on! — Teaching Off Trail A colleague once told me a funny story. Apparently, a current second grader was telling her younger sibling who was ready to enter kindergarten what to expect. Her word of advice. . .if you get Mr. Dargatz, all you do is play. At first, I must admit, I was a bit embarrassed. I didn’t want incoming

Love getting reviews for Teaching Off Trail!

"I’m loving reading Teaching Off Trail: so much of what Peter writes about resonates with my experience working in the public schools and private practice, and with the engagement I’ve seen when I’m able to focus on play and getting outside with the children I work with. I’m also now a homeschooling parent and absolutely love the encouragement and inspiration I’ve gotten from Teaching Off Trail to dig into play and nature in our homeschooling journey. Peter beautifully articulates and celebrates so many of the truths I’ve felt deep down for a long time with respect to the education I want to help provide for my students and clients, as well as for my own children. Teaching Off Trail was exactly what I needed to read to reassure myself that focusing on play and getting in touch with the outdoors is not only worthwhile, but essential for our kids. I loved the enthusiasm, encouragement, and practical suggestions included in the book. I especially love the QR codes that link to the amazingly helpful checklists Peter described. I will be using so many of these ideas and can’t wait to share this resource with anyone interested in the benefits of focusing on play and nature with kids."

Love — Teaching Off Trail 17/01/2022

Now, more than ever.

Love — Teaching Off Trail Life in the world right now is lacking in many qualities necessary for harmony. It seems like everywhere you go, everywhere you look, and everything you hear is divisive and disheartening. Schools have not escaped this division. The politicization of education is evident. Meet and talk with the author PETER DARGATZ at our shop!

His book TEACHING OFF TRAIL offers strategies for readers to implement Peter's unique teaching philosophy to increase opportunities for play, creative expression, and personalization in both the indoor and outdoor classroom. In his own classroom, Peter brought learning outside by creating a nature kindergarten program that emphasizes community partnerships, service learning, and meaningful and memorable experiences in the outdoors. He incorporates techniques often identified as more informal settings like Reggio or Montessori, and shows how they work within a public school system.

Teaching Off Trail aims to inspire educators, administrators, and parents across all levels to turn their outrage for today's educational system into outreach that promotes passionate and purposeful problem-solving.
