It is really important to me that children and young people with dyslexia have access to books and creative writing. Over the last few months as Reader in Residence in Wexford Library I have been working to establish book clubs and writing clubs for children with dyslexia. This evening at the "Turbo Team" book club in Enniscorthy Library I facilitated a Christmas themed cartoon storytelling workshop. We had so much fun. The Elf on the shelf made a guest appearance!! He was so impressed and it turns out that is very good at writing stories too.

'Reader in Residence' is an initiative developed by Wexford Library Services, for children and parents to explore shared literacy and reading activities.

I am so proud of the book clubs for children with dyslexia in Wexford Libraries one parent remarked “A light has been lit. My child has discovered that they love reading for the first time.” This positive feedback highlights the amazing work that libraries do everyday! was back in this morning! The stories were incredible!! Well done everyone. Teamwork makes the dream work. 📚📚
Today was spent in the most wonderful way in we were joined by some wonderful guest speakers. Fiona Ferris from As I Am Ireland spoke about inclusion and making libraries inclusive for all people. Then we were taught Lámh, Irish sign language by Senior speech and language therapists Heather Byrne and Susan Crawford. We discovered that the sign for library is book house! 📚🙌😊
Some really good news to share. I am delighted to announce that myself and artist John Busher have had our project Travelling Tales approved by the Department of Rural and Community Development as part of Library Supports. Travelling Tales is a collaborative literacy project between myself John Busher, Leabharlann LochGarman and members of the Travelling Community.
The stories of Traveller history do not feature in Irish history. Their voices are often not heard or recorded in books and in art. In order for the next generation of children to fully access the literacy skills that they require to participate fully in society they need to see themselves represented in the world around them. The library plays a vital link in making this happen. Thank you so much to Leabharlann LochGarman and The Department of Rural and Community Development for making this project possible.
This is wonderful!

I am working on so many exciting projects as Reader in Residence! One of them is “Read To Succeed” I developed this programme to support women who have recently moved to Ireland and don’t have English as their first language. The women in the group are learning ways to help their children with their homework and to develop reading skills. This morning the ladies in the group wrote their own stories in English in Leabharlann Gorey. I am so proud of everything they have achieved so far.
