The Relationship Economy with Jerry Michalski

WHERE: PresidioSpace (249 9th Street between Folsom and Howard)

WHEN: Wednesday, February 22, 2012 @ 6:30 PM

http://rexy.eventbrite.com/

Jerry Michalski is the founder of REX, the Relationship Economy eXpedition.

He is a pattern finder, lateral thinker, Gladwellian connector, facilitator and explorer of the interactions between technology, society and business.

From 1987 to 1998, Jerry was a technology analyst, focusing not on quarterly earnings but rather on which technologies would be useful and which would be distractions, what trends and forces create new potential, and where all these forces might take us over a 20-year timeframe.

For the last five years of that period, Jerry was the Managing Editor of Esther Dyson's monthly tech newsletter Release 1.0, as well as co-host of her annual conference, PC Forum. He was fortunate to be on duty when the Internet showed up.

Prior to writing Release 1.0, Jerry spent five years at New Science Associates, a technology market-research firm similar to Gartner (later bought by Gartner). At New Science, Jerry launched and ran two retainer research services, Intelligent Document Management (which included hypertext and groupware) and Continuous Information Environments (which included wireless communications, voice/data integration and then-hot pen computing).

Jerry has worked with companies such as Best Buy and Havas Media as well as non-profits such as EDF and the Institute for the Future. He's been widely quoted in the major media and greatly enjoys public speaking.

He also acts as a technology advisor to startups, ranging from Twineand CoTweet (acquired by ExactTarget) to EverNote, TheBrain,Socialtext and Seedwiki. During the dot-boom days, Jerry was an advisor to eGroups (now YahooGroups) and Pyra (now Blogger, part of Google).

His first real job in the world was as a transportation rate clerk at Mobil Oil, looking up freight rates in a room full of paper tariffs at the same time as he was learning about computing and the early online world with an Apple II+ and a 300-baud Hayes modem. Between Mobil and New Science, Jerry earned an MBA from the Wharton School and spent almost three years in strategy consulting with an internal strategy startup at Price Waterhouse.

Lessons from Wikipedia

A few seats left!!!

Join us for our second monthly Presidio Alumni Association speaker event featuring Jerry Michalski on the Relationship Economy:

What Makes an organization REXy?

REX is the Relationship Economy eXpedition.

The next social and industrial order has more to do with abundance and trust than with scarcity and stickiness. The key assets are trusted relationships.

In such a world, whom you trust and who trusts you are primary assets. You’ll choose the product (or vote for the candidate) that people you trust recommend, from among the abundant choices.

We will explore key elements of the Relationship Economy, playing out what it means for business, culture, society, governance, education and more, because its effects will be widespread and durable.
This is the Relationship Economy, and we’ll be exploring it together

Here's a great video of Jerry talking about Wikipedia:

No Straight Lines: Making sense of our non-linear world - with Alan Moore

The Presidio Alumni Association invites you for a conversation with Alan Moore, autor of the newly published "No Straight Lines: Making sense of our non-linear World".

When: 10 AM - 11 AM PST on Friday January 27, 2012
Access information will be e-mailed to you once you sign up on Eventbrite.

In Alan's words:
"We have arrived at the edge of the adaptive range of our industrial world. At the edge, because that world, our world is being overwhelmed by a trilemma of social, organisational and economic complexity. We are in transit from a linear world to a non-linear one. Non-linear because it is for all of us socially, organisationally and economically ambiguous, confusing and worrying. Consequently we are faced with an increasingly pressing and urgent problem, WHAT COMES NEXT? And also we are therefore presented with a design challenge: HOW do we create better societies, more able organisations and, more vibrant and equitable economies relevant to the world we live in today? No Straight Lines presents a new logic/literacy and inspiring plea for a more human centric world that describes an entirely new way for true social, economic and organisational innovation to happen."

Alan is the founder of the innovation consultancy firm SMLXL and co-author of “Communities Dominate Brands”: in which he coined the phrase ‘engagement marketing’ and explored the significant implications for business and organisations of living in a wired-up, networked, socially orientated world.
He sits on the “board of inspiration” at the Dutch Think Tank Freedom Lab. He acts as “Head of Vision” for the Grow Venture Community. He is a visiting lecturer at the Cambridge University Judge Business School, and at the Oxford University Saïd Business School including Exec Ed programs. Alan is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
