Dr. McKinney is the head of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department here at The Citadel. He has been with the school since August of 1997 and is the longest serving member of the department. When asked why he loves his job, Dr. McKinney answered: "I enjoy the field of electrical engineering, but I *love* interacting with our awesome students!" His biggest piece of advice for students in the field is: "Try to recognize that these four years of hard work will pay off with a lifetime of a rewarding career-stick with it and utilize the resources available."
Dr. McKinney helped start the Citadel robotics summer camps and the eWeek robotics competitions. He has also worked with the School of Education to help bring engineering and robotics programs to students at underserved schools. He has been married to his wife,Caroline, for 26 years and has two children, Jonathan, a rising senior at Furman, and Alex, a rising senior at Wando HS. In his spare time, he enjoys cooking, working on jigsaw puzzles, and running.

Did you know?

- In 1941, the Board of Visitors authorized the establishment of a Department of Electrical Engineering at The Citadel. Because World War II intervened, the first electrical engineering degrees were awarded to the class of 1948.

- Today, the electrical and computer engineering department offers courses in two modes—day mode and the 2+2 evening mode. The day mode is open only to members of the South Carolina Corps of Cadets, veterans, and enlisted active duty students assigned to one of The Citadel’s ROTC Departments. The 2+2 evening mode is open to transfer students and does not require ROTC or Health and Physical Education. Otherwise, curricula, faculty, textbooks, laboratory equipment, course content, classrooms, and laboratory rooms are the same for both modes.

Over 70 research posters were presented during our annual Student Excellence Day — an outstanding accomplishment for our cadets and students during any year, but especially in light of the unique challenges presented by COVID-19. Congratulations to our cadets and students who continue to make Our Mighty Citadel proud!

After decades of innovating, leading and teaching, John Peeples, Ph.D., Citadel Class of 1970, still comes to campus energized about the field of electrical engineering. Peeples’s devotion to all things in the realm of computer and electrical engineering, or “techno-lust” as he calls it, continue to earn him accolades-most recently a scholarship named his honor-the “Dr. Johnston W. Peeples, ‘70 Electrical and Computer Engineering Scholarship.” This scholarship was made possible by two fellow engineering alumni (one of which is a former student of Dr. Peeple’s) who are currently with Nova Technologies. Thanks for all of your hard work and dedication Dr. Peeples!

Seniors, we are beyond proud of your hard work and dedication up to this point and it was the department's honor to present your rings at the Order of the Engineer Ceremony this past Tuesday night! During this event, students received a certificate and solid silver pinky ring, worn on the working hand. This ring signifies the obligation of an engineer to pursue excellence and selfless service to the profession and the public during their career. The spirit of this event seeks to celebrate the pride and responsibility students pursuing the profession have worked diligently to earn. Seniors, congratulations on your induction into the order! Tag someone you know who received their ring this past week in the comments!
