"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” – George Santayana, The Life of Reason, 1905.

5 Ally Actions - Feb 17 2023 18/02/2023

"A newsletter subscriber, who I’ll refer to as Mark, told me about a recent meeting where the organizer, who is two levels above him in the organization, used the phrase, “this document serves several masters.” They then listed the positions of the people who would use the document.

Mark said, “At first, I was shocked.” He added, “I knew I had to say something, but I wondered if I should do it in the meeting or privately?”

I bet many of us have been in the same situation. I know I have. Should we speak up in the moment or wait to provide feedback in private?

Mark decided to say something right then and there, even though he admitted, “It was truly uncomfortable to call out a manager two levels up.”

When the leader asked if there were any questions, Mark responded, “Speaking as an ally, could I ask you to please use a different phrase instead of ‘serves several masters’ and go with ‘serves several purposes?’”

The leader looked a little surprised. But he repeated the phrase Mark suggested and said that he could use that in the future.

Mark also told me, “As you’ve said, being an ally is not always easy, but it is necessary to show it.”
