Look who it is! 👀 I know I’ve been missing for a while. Let me explain what I’ve been up to. 👩‍🎓 I went back to school for a Master’s in Second Language Studies - this is an interdisciplinary field that not only looks how people learn languages, but also language policies, curriculum design, teaching practices, and so much more.

As part of the program, I’m required to teach English courses and tutor students.📚 Between taking my own graduate courses, lesson planning, grading, and tutoring sessions, I’ve been swamped!

Moving is stressful and I haven’t settled down 100% but I am hoping that in the next few weeks, I will start to have more of a routine and I can get back to creating videos and posts for you all on the regular.

I appreciate you all sticking around during this break. This community means the world to me and I can’t want to connect more. Are you excited for some more posts? What would you like to see from me? Let me know in the comments!

Lost when listening to English? 🤔 It's not your fault! 😣 Many of us learn languages by reading. 📚 But English spelling doesn't match the pronunciation! 😵 Like the past tense ending -ed:

• Wanted (extra syllable)
• Called (quick d sound)
• Helped (t sound)

Looking up a word’s pronunciation often only gives the “textbook” version, not how words change based on context. 📝 A word's pronunciation is flexible!

How to improve:
1️⃣ Learn the textbook pronunciation
2️⃣ Hear how words change in real speech (Youglish helps!)

Need extra support? Join my course Listen Up! We'll tackle it together! 💪DM or comment LISTEN for more information.👇

🇺🇸 It’s back to school season here in the USA, so I thought I would share 4 interesting facts:

✏️Decentralization - The US has no national K-12 standards or curriculum. Instead, local districts and states make the rules on things like textbooks, testing, teachers etc. This means schools can look very different between states and even cities!
✏️Extracurricular Emphasis - American schools put a huge focus on sports, clubs, music and more outside the classroom. Most students join multiple extracurriculars, which are key for college applications.
✏️Free Transportation - Over 25 million US students ride yellow school buses, more than any other country!
✏️Public School Popularity - Approximately 90% of American K-12 students attend public schools. Their accessibility and affordability make them the choice for most families.

How does the US compare to education in your country? Let us know in the comments! 👇

This series gives you small tips for listening like a pro. Here’s tip #1:

Give yourself a reason to listen closely. Ask questions first, then listen for the answers.

For example, before a TED talk ask "Do I agree with the speaker?" Then listen to find out!

Setting a goal keeps you engaged and paying attention instead of passively listening.

🎧 When it comes to learning a new language, we often focus on vocabulary, grammar, and speaking. But developing strong listening skills is just as important, if not more!

🤔 Why?
👂Listening is the first communication skill we acquire, even before speaking. It builds a critical language foundation.
👂Studies show we gain nearly half of language competence simply by listening and absorbing patterns.
👂In daily life, we spend far more time listening than speaking. Conversations require comprehension.
👂 Without understanding others, communication breaks down.

Yet listening can be a major struggle with so many variations in speech, speed, and accents. It takes work!

But listening improvement IS possible with focus and the right guidance...which leads me to an exciting announcement coming soon!

I've created a new course launching this month dedicated specifically to taking your English listening skills to the next level. More details coming very soon - stay tuned!

🌟 I know it's not every student's favorite subject to hear about, but hey, here's the truth: there is always going to be something to learn when it comes to language. Now, that doesn’t mean that it will always be HARD, but you need to accept that the journey continues.

🚀 Learning a language has ups and downs, and as we conquer one challenge, there will always be new ones to face.

🎉 For this reason, it’s important to enjoy the process. Take some time to celebrate what you’ve accomplished and to have fun doing what you’re doing.
