In the spring a grant was written for Green Meadows School to host Local Mural Artist John Matlock Muralist. We were awarded the grant funding through The Mass Cultural Council . We are thankful to Mass Cultural Council for making this experience possible.
Our mural was painted on our cinder block wall in our school cafeteria (90'x9'). The mural was finished in October 2023.
The grant requirements outlined highlighting the arts and science.
The mural illustrates a wordless pictorial story moving from left to right highlighting the life cycle of the Monarch Butterfly and it's migration pattern across three countries.
John worked quickly and was able to complete the mural over 5 school days, during school hours so the students could observe an artist in action.
Homeroom classes had the opportunity to sign up for Q&A sessions with John. So many students commented that they loved to see an artist at work and get to ask their burning questions.
Not only did students visit John throughout the week but they also observed John while they were in the cafe for their regularly scheduled lunch block.
It was an amazing experience for our school community.
Another element of the grant was a community component. We will be hosting an art show with art work on display by our young artists. One piece from every student and a ribbon cutting ceremony to offically kick off the unveiling of our mural to the community.
More updates to come.
