Term 2 has begun, and one of my favourite times of year is the Creative Dance Unit I get to teach my students each Spring! It's always a nice change of pace towards the end of the school year from my role as the "Music Teacher" and I get to see some of my students truly come out of their shells and express themselves in so many different and CREATIVE ways than I ever would in a Music classroom!
Needless to say, our usual lessons involving students working in small groups to create, practice and perform Dance sequences is not going to work this year in our socially-distant face-to-face instruction or (God forbid...) if we should need to go back to Online instruction.
So in true 2020-21 fashion, I've had to re-imagine and re-create all my go-to tried and true lessons so that I can still find ways to have my students create, interpret, and explore a variety of dance forms, in meaningful and engaging ways.
This video clip is going to be part of lesson 1 for my grade 4-8 students! I'm hoping this will get students hooked and excited about DANCE and as we progress through the unit I'll incorporate content from Social Media, relevant Influencers, Tik Tok, and Dance Competition Shows such as World of Dance and So You Think You Can Dance! (Some of my favourite reality shows to watch!)

I tried making a screen recording of myself in a google meet sharing some songs and music & movement activities with my Kinder students today! Video gets a bit laggy at the end when I was trying to do a Rhythm Play-along with them.. but overall I think this might be the best way to share an asynchronous lesson with them!

Here is the site I've created for my Kindergarten to Grade 3 level students! Daily videos with songs, games, and general silliness 😀 will be posted at 9:00am each day!

It makes me very happy to open up emails from parents and students and see you still joyfully making Music in these difficult times! So thank you very much to all who took the time to send me pictures or stories of what things they were able to find in last week's Musical Scavenger Hunt! I got many chuckles reading your responses!
Love Miss Belanger
A note for my Grade 4-7 students: (posted this morning in their Google Classroom Music Pages)
Hi everyone!
Welcome to Week #2 of our Distance Learning in Music & Dance!
Thank you to everyone for your patience last week. This whole concept of trying to teach Music completely online is still new to me and I am trying to learn new tech skills and programs as quickly as possible. I hope that you are finding the workload sufficient and not overwhelming at this time. At some point during this week, I would like you to complete a brief Google Forms survey for me, so I can get a sense on if you feel that you have the right amount of work.
https://forms.gle/FtHxX5WsHBUHP513A
I have reorganized our Google Classroom's pages slightly into Topics for Week #1 and Week #2 instead of just having everything posted in the Stream. I hope that this will make it easier for you to find your activities for the week and be more clear on what I would love to see completed by the end of the week. Learning can be done at your own pace and the tasks do not have to be done on the day they are written.
And if one week gets away from you because of something happening at home, you can always go back and work on past week's activities later on if you have more time. *Just send me a little message to let me know you submitted something to a previous week's topic as I may not think to check there regularly to give you feedback.
If you are finding the workload too light and would like more, please let me know in the google forms survey I will post shortly and I will create some additional activities that you can complete if you choose. (The 30 Days Song Challenge assignment I posted last week is considered to be one of these additional "extras")
I understand that the completion of school work for some of you can be another added stress at this time and yet for others it provides some much needed structure and excitement to your daily life.
Please know that I understand that each of you have unique family struggles right now which may preclude you from completing the tasks each week. Complete what is possible for you without adding any extra pressure, and if nothing else, just send me a quick message on Google Hangouts, or as a private comment on our google classroom page and let me know that you are doing alright!
If you are having any questions or concerns, please let me know. I am here for you and am praying for all of you every single day! It has been such a challenge these last few weeks to not get to interact with you all in person each week in Music class. I miss it tremendously.
Thank you for your patience with this new approach to learning.

This week's first "Singing Storybook" video! One of my all-time favourite ones to sing (who am I kidding...I say that about every one! 😄)
I present... Miss Belanger's attempt to be all "technologically-advanced" with screen shots of all the pictures in the book, and a we**am in the corner showing me singing along!

Teachers across the province are trying their very best to create distance learning portals for their students to begin today. The collaboration and professionalism by my colleagues in Renfrew County Catholic District School Board has been humbling and inspiring. While the Minister of Education has not mentioned learning in the Arts, I can tell you that, particularly Ontario Music teachers, are keenly aware of the importance of music in these times of isolation. Although classroom teachers will be the primary connection point for students and families next week, remember the other teachers and educational workers who are working behind the scenes to support the ‘frontline’ classroom teachers. We are all charting new territory here together. In the meantime, if you need a little music or dance in your life, my little labour of love went live this morning. ❤️
Normally, I see every class for 40 minutes once a week, so please expect new material to be posted to this website every "Music Monday" and I will move the previous week's activities to the "Past Lessons" page (accessible from the drop-down menu at the top left-hand side of the screen)
This site is mainly intended for my youngest learners (students in Kindergarten to Grade 3), I will be reaching out directly to my students in Grades 4 - 7 with activities and materials posted on their Google Classroom pages (please email me if your child does not have a separate MUSIC Google Classroom page listed along with their homeroom teacher's page). However, older students are more than welcome to watch some of my videos and participate in any of the activities I post here as well!

Music with Miss Belanger I am so happy to be connecting with you all! This is the place where you and your family can connect with me. I know it isn't the best situation, but I am here to continue our Music & Dance learning while we are unable to meet face-to-face.

A little video tutorial of how to draw a TREBLE CLEF! In case any of my older students in grades 4-7 need a “refresher” for next week’s Music Choice Board assignment. (Where one of the choices of activities is to practice drawing a treble clef 10 times and send me a picture of the finished product!)
I’ll post the choice board on Monday morning to their MUSIC google classroom pages and they’ll have the whole week to complete at least 3 activities, and they’re certainly welcome to complete more if they wish! 😃
Singing the book “The Marvellous Toy” by Tom Paxton (a special request by Mrs. Spencer! 🥰)
Dear students and families,
First off, let me say welcome to this page and thank you for joining me! I have created it as another way to stay in contact with you all during this Covid-19 break from school. I want you to know that your teachers care about you and we have your best interest in mind. We are going to do whatever it takes to make the rest of your school year the best it can be regardless of what it looks like.
If you would like to practice some of songs and games we use regularly in class, during our extended break from school check out the student log-in for the Musicplay website I frequently use in class. (No log-in name or password required!)
https://musicplayonline.com/
Take care and stay healthy! Sing lots and listen to great music! I will be putting up some fun music and dance activities you can try completing with your families in the next few days and I always look forward to hearing you sing or seeing pictures or videos of activities you’ve tried!
I already miss all of you dearly.
❤️Miss Belanger 🎶
