An interesting anatomical Question/ fact of the month:
Varicoceles are more commonly seen on which side?
Why do patients with a varicocele develop BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia)?
Answer:
1. Varicoceles are more common on the LEFT due to its drainage into the left renal vein. The right testicular vein drains directly into the IVC. The left testicular vein also suffers from a right angle as it enters the renal vein, lack of antireflux valves at this juncture, increased length (8cm longer) and lastly due to higher renal vein pressure due to its compression between the SMA and aorta (known as 'the NUTcracker effect'!)
2. Due to the above, higher pressure/difficult drainage into left renal vein, the testosterone rich blood seeks a collateral drainage via the prostatic veins, hence promoting BPH!
Understanding is better than rote learning!
