“River Crossing” - solfa game
Prep School Music
Sharing Kodály-inspired activities, games and songs for the music classroom.
Operating as usual
Little composing idea using solfa “dominoes” from melodic patterns in Ida Red. 🎵
The fabulous Helen Blackmore in action!
Note to self:
Don’t let classes inner-hear the middle pitch in “Hot Cross Buns.” 🤦🏼♂️
A little rhythm fun yesterday using Al Hirt’s “Java!” 🎺 🎵
With the NYCOS and British Kodály Academy musicianship classes kicking off this week, I was reminded of this little ditty… anyone up for a challenge!? 😜
“Who Stole My Chickens?” 🐔
—————————
This one always gets requested as a game, but it’s also perfect for practising dotted rhythms, rest groupings and … sequences! 🥚 🐣 🐓

Christmas rehearsals approach... so thought I'd share a cover acitivty on BEAT & METRE.
When they've finished discussing (aruging?) whether it's 2, 3 or 4, they can practise the conducting patterns.
Feel free to use, but music and images are copyright, so sharing here for classroom use only. Link below:

Anyone remember this sort of notation?
Found in a carol book in a shop near Forres, Scotland.
“Seeds” is a canon by the eminently talented Astrid Jorgensen - founder of Pub Choir - and commissioned by the Queensland Kodály Choir with their conductor, Dr James Cuskelly as part of a project, creating a legacy of community songs. (Kodály QLD).
I knocked up a piano accompaniment for this canon to use with my children’s choir. If this would be useful for others, a recording is below and PDF in comments - excuse a pianists’ voice!

Sharpie + Blank jigsaw = today’s decoding activity! 😁
Today’s challenge: clap one and sing the other! 🤯
“Test the Teacher” - RHYTHM GAME
If the teacher can say the flashcard the team claps, that team scores a point. All about that accurate clapping! First to 5, wins… 🏆

That’s a wrap NYCOS Summer School 2024!
Loads of learning, laughter, great delegates, a near-lethal ceilidh… and a huge privilege to work with this brilliant bunch of coconuts! 🥰

Can't wait for NYCOS summer school next week!
Sneaky peek at some music for our "Diverse Repertoire" sessions; this absolute banger of a Juba Dance by Nathaniel Dett. 🥰
