Did you know performance camps at The Lotus Project include daily visual art and other activities...not JUST working on a show? This week we are working on a mosaic project of our favorite animal or pet...inspired by Junie B.'s pet dog Tickle! Stay tuned for finished projects!

While our nation celebrates the concept of "Independence" on this day, we continue to hold onto hope. Hope that, some day, EVERY human who calls this nation home will FEEL and be able LIVE the "Freedom" of which our country speaks on July 4. This day of "freedom" was established while the system of chattel slavery was building and maintaining the country - and those slaves were not freed on that day. Freedom for some while others suffer due to the color of their skin, their gender or sexuality, their religion, their socio-economic status, their culture, their family structure, their immigration status, their disabilities, the list goes on, is nothing but injustice. And any amount of injustice is a threat to ALL justice. We will continue the work we are doing to find injustice, name it, and protest against it. And above all, we will hold fast and strong to hope that someday we will see and live in a time that truly feels FREE.

This year at camp, we took the opportunity to learn about Black Artists and their beautiful art. We talked about what Juneteenth is, why it is important, and why it is celebrated today. Then we created our own Romare Bearden inspired “jazz” collages.

Ibram X. Kendi spoke on the idea of “Radical Hope” Juneteenth being a celebration of the radical hope that enslaved African Americans held onto through the terrors of chattel slavery. And on June 19, 1865, that “Radical Hope” won.

Here is to more RADICAL HOPE. To bring about more RADICAL CHANGE in the way that Black Americans are treated and thought of in this country. We see you, we validate you, and we CELEBRATE YOU.

Week one of "Finding Nemo Jr." was a success! Full of singing and dancing, art projects, and pajama day...we are gearing up and getting excited for week two!
