What information source are you basing your opinion on? Last week's report, released by the Premier of South Australia, proposed draft legislation for the age of social media use. It is hoped that the report will inform Australian policy and shape new regulation (together with the Age Assurance Trial and the Social Media Summit). A regulator may exempt some social media from the regulation. There is still debate both between experts and even between youth representatives about whether a ban will help, what constitutes "healthy" use of social media and the age that should be legislated for. When the report was commissioned, "14" was the age given to the Honorable Mr Robert French with 15 to 16 being permitted with parental consent. This guideline has moved forward within the report. As clinicians, researchers and parents it is time to remain informed and ensure everyone understands the underlying evidence (and arguments) that dominate the discussion.
