“S” is for Serena!
Serena Williams is the best tennis players of all time. Both Serena and her older sister, Venus grew up in Compton, California and were taught the game of tennis by their dad, Richard. Serena has won more grand slams titles than any other woman or man!

Did you know that won her first Olympic gold medal with her sister, Venus, in the doubles event?

“R” is for Rosa! Rosa Parks is most known for refusing to give up her seat to a white passenger, which sparked the Montgomery bus boycott. However, she trained and fought for equal rights for black Americans long before the bus incident occurred.

Did you know that while worked as a seamstress at an integrated military base where blacks and whites were not separate, she rode an integrated trolley everyday? However she has to ride a segregated bus back and forth to work everyday.

Queen Latifah is an actress, producer, and one of the first female rappers. In high school, she was member of an all girls rap group called Ladies Fresh. When she was only 18, she recorded her first demo tape. She went on to record three more albums mixing rap, reggae, R&B, and jazz before winning her first Grammy in 1993.

Did you know what Queen Latifah’s real name is Dana. However, she was given the nickname Latifah as child. Latifah is Arabic for delicate.

“P” is for Pharrell! Pharrell Williams is a fashion designer, musician, artist,and music producer. Even as a kid, Pharrell had an affinity for music. He joined his school’s band as a drummer. Soon after, Pharrell began making music with and for major singers and rappers.

Oprah Winfrey is an actress, producer, philanthropist, journalist, and talk show host. Even as a little girl Oprah was bright, well spoken, and loved to read. When Oprah was in high school, she won a speech contest that led to a full scholarship to Tennessee State University.

“N” is for Nina! Nina Simone was an activist, pianist, and singer who used her songs to teach people about the hard lives that many black Americans faced because of unfair laws and practices against them.

“M” is for Mae. Dr. Mae Jemison is an engineer, physician, and former Astronaut. Is the first black women to travel to space.

Did you know that while was in medical school, she was also a dancer at the school of dance? She even brought a poster of famous Alvin Ailey dancer, Judith Jamison to outer space with her.

“L” is for Langston. Langston Hughes became famous for writing poems, novels, plays, and short stories about the black experience in America and Africa. He is one of the special writers of in the Harlem Renaissance.

you know that is called the “Busboy Poet” because quit his corporate job to work at a D.C. hotel busboy so he could have time to work on his poems.

“K” is for Kobe. Kobe Bryant was a professional basketball player, author, and philanthropist. At 17 years old, Kobe was one of the youngest player drafted to the NBA from high school. He was quickly traded to the Los Angeles Lakers, where he played his entire career. In the first few years of Kobe’s career, he struggled. However, he did not give up but he practiced every day to become one the greatest players.

Did you know that Kobe spoke fluent Italian? He also spoke Spanish and some Mandarin Chinese.

“J” is for Jackie. Jackie Robinson was a baseball player. He played one year in the all- black Negro League before becoming the first player to desegregate the all white Major League.

Did you know that excelled in many sports. He was a good basketball, football, track & field, and tennis player.

“I” is for Issa. Issa Rae is a writer, producer, and actress comedienne. She is from Los Angeles, CA. While in college at Stanford University, Issa began making her own films and documentaries.

“H” is for Harlem Renaissance! The Harlem Renaissance was a time of great creativity, music, arts, poetry, literature, and business for black Americans in the 1920s who lived, worked, and supported each other in the Harlem, NY neighborhood.

“G” is for George! George Washington Carver was one of the greatest farmers, scientists, and inventors! He created over 300 ways to use peanuts, sweet potatoes, shampoos, and even glue.

“F” is for Fannie. Fannie Lou Hamer started her life as a sharecropper at six years old. Fannie’s schooling ended around 6th grade. She did not let her lack of education or background stop her. She used her powerful voice to help thousands of poor Black Americans in the South become registered voters known as Freedom Summer.

Did you know that Fannie Lou Hamer was the created the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party in an effort to desegregate the Democratic Party?

“E” is for Ella. Ella Fitzgerald’s nickname was “The First Lady of Song.” Her signature vocal range, tone, original s**t singing style allowed her to perform all of the world for over 50 years!

Duke Ellington was a U.S. pianist, composer, and bandleader. He was one of the originators of big-band jazz, or jazz that uses large orchestras with many musicians.

Did you know that Duke’s real name was Edward and he started playing the piano at 7 years old?

“C” is for Charles. Charles Drew was a surgeon, medical researcher, and activist. He trained a generation of black doctors at the Freedman’s Hospital. Dr. Drew is most known for his research in storing, processing, and shipping blood plasma, which saved hundreds of lives during World War II and continues to save lives today.

Did you know that was a football coach at the now Morgan State University so he could save money for medical school.
