Meninas dão aulas no Xadrez quando querem
Another unedited excerpt of my upcoming autobiography:
At home, my daily chess lessons (still as a 4 year old) with my father now took up hours each day as we attacked increasingly complicated aspects of the game. I would work on reading and writing a little each day, and math lessons were still a major part of my father's instruction, but chess kept consuming more and more of my attention. It didn't take long for us to exhaust what little chess knowledge my father possessed. And pretty soon, my parents were using whatever money they could spare on chess books.
We'd spent weeks poring over classic Hungarian books like Laszlo Alfoldy's 33 Chess Lessons, or 200 Opening Traps by Emil Gelenczei, extracting every last insight and bit of wisdom we could from each page. By the time we were through with a book, it was dog-eared and creased within an inch of its life. These books would become what Dr. Seuss or fairy tales are to other young children. Not just school books, but sources of immense enjoyment and meaning for me.
My father used these materials to create lessons tailored to my specific strengths and weaknesses. His idea was that, if I felt like I was improving each day, I would remain motivated to keep learning more. This, in turn, would lead to more improvement, which would lead to more motivation, and so on. It worked beautifully.
Finding mate in four, or winning material with pins, skewers, and forks -- these tasks quickly became second-nature to me. He'd make whole lessons out of famous "miniatures" (short games where each player makes only 10 or 20 moves), some of which I would commit to memory and recite to him without the board in front of me.

One of the most popular questions I was asked over the years is what are some of my most special moments in chess. I have experienced hundreds if not thousands of exciting, wonderful and memorable moments during my chess career, a career that has spanned over 50 years. It was not easy, but I have narrowed these moments down to the top 12.
12. Coming out of retirement after over 8 years to win multiple Gold and Silver medals for team USA, including the highest individual performance, and extending a record unbeaten streak of 56 games (never losing a single game), all on board 1, at the Chess Olympiad.
11. Becoming the first woman in history to coach collegiate men’s division I chess, and winning more championships than all other male coaches, COMBINED, in my 12 years at TTU and Webster University.
10. Meeting and playing countless games against Bobby Fischer (in addition to helping him creating the rules for Fischer Random which are used today).
9. Scoring 10-0 at the 1973 Budapest Championship for girls under 11 at the age of 4!
8. Winning the 1981 World Junior Championship for girls under 16 at age 12!
7. Winning the gold medal at the 1990 Olympiad with my sisters.
6. Becoming the first woman ever to break the gender barrier, qualifying for the Men’s World Championship cycle.
5. Becoming the #1 ranked woman player in the world at age 15, the youngest ever at that time.
4. Winning the 1992 Women’s World Blitz and Rapid Championship.
3. Winning the 1996 Women’s World Chess Championship and becoming the first chess player in history to complete the elusive Triple-Crown.
2. Winning the gold medal at the 1988 Olympiad with my sisters, and ending the Soviet dominance in Women’s Chess (they won gold in every Olympiad they competed in up to that time).
1. Becoming the first woman ever to break the gender barrier, earning the Grandmaster title by norms and rating!

The greatest South American chess player in history! He was #3 behind Karpov and Korchnoi. He just turned 72! He would have been so much more successful if he did not have to deal with serious health issues. Thankfully, his health is better now. I had the pleasure of meeting him in 2004 in Calvia.
Who is he?

Breaking the GENDER BARRIER:
On this day 30 years ago (January 6, 1991), I got my 3rd norm to become the first woman in history to break the gender barrier to earn the “Men’s” Grandmaster title (3 norms + 2500 rating). 👑

Poem by ChatGPT
My love, the chessboard is our stage
With black and white in equal rage
We move our pieces with a subtle grace
Each move a step in this tender chase
The queen, my dear, she reigns supreme
Her power strong, her will a dream
But watch out for the bishop's sly move
He'll capture her heart in one smooth groove
The knight, he's a gentleman with flair
He leaps and bounds, without a care
The rook, steadfast, with sturdy might
Guarding the king, through day and night
And oh, my love, the king himself
He's the one I seek, no one else
With all his power, he's still so weak
Without his queen, his heart's not complete
So let's play this game of love and chess
With every move, we'll both confess
Our love, our passion, and our desire
Our hearts on fire, we'll never tire
In this game, we'll both emerge
With hearts so full, and love so pure
And when the game is finally done
We'll know that we are truly one.
