"Healing, change, enlightenment, suffering, and indeed the choice to end suffering all only happen in the present. Despite that powerful truth, meditation inevitably wakes us up to the sobering realization that we are actually living outside of the present most of the time."

"Mindfulness is looking back into the process and seeing the gears and the gear shifts... learning how your mind works."

"When we actually notice that a thought has arisen, we are experiencing a little moment of pure awareness. … You can think of them as little sparks of wakefulness. The more sparks you have, the more you'll be able to build a fire of awareness and presence that doesn't flicker out so easily." - Rebecca D'Onofrio () in our most recent "Food for Non-Thought" newsletter

Rebecca, our Program & Operations Director at Dharma Moon, brings this practical wisdom to all our meditation programs. With over 15 years of teaching experience and deep Buddhist practice in the Karma Kagyu lineage, she helps students recognize that moments of awareness are the foundation of effective meditation practice.

🧘‍♂️ "To become a great teacher, it is essential to remain an engaged student and cultivate a strong personal practice" - David Nichtern

The most profound teaching often emerges from our own direct experience on the cushion. As meditation instructors, we must first learn to work with our own mind and heart before we can truly guide others. This is where the journey begins and deepens.

🚗 What if Car Horns Told the Truth?
Imagine if your car horn simply announced: 'I'm having a hard time right now'
'I'm uncomfortable and don't know what to do'

This playful reframe from reveals what's really happening in our moments of reactivity - and points to a more mindful way of working with difficult emotions.

From last week's Yearlong Buddhist Studies Course, where we explore Buddhist approaches to transforming reactivity into wisdom.
In the session, we also discussed:
• How mindfulness increases awareness of emotions, allowing us to engage with curiosity instead of suppressing or reacting impulsively
• Why even difficult emotions like anger and grief hold wisdom—and how they can be transformed instead of rejected
• The three yanas, or stages of Buddhist teachings, and how they shape our understanding of emotions as we progress through them.
