OHS Centennial Celebration

OHS Centennial Celebration

Ottumwa High School turns 100 in 2023, let's celebrate!

Obituary information for Lloyd Lawson 13/09/2023

From OHS Centennial Celebration Committee member, Alair. Our hearts were all so full after sharing this special day with these special alumni. Rest in Peace Mr. Lawson.

I would like to share the life and times of one of our own. I was honored to participate and help to organize the OHS Centennial activities this year. One of my main focuses was gathering the Royal Court to lead our parade. I was able, with the help of our community, to investigate and find 12 OHS alumni ranging from 79 to 102 years young to ride in style leading Ottumwa Community Schools in celebrating OHS's 100th birthday. It was a pleasure and honor to greet each one of these individuals . Each one met me with a smile and tales of their time walking the halls of Ottumwa High School. There were tears of joy and pride for our community, my community. The love and sense of belonging was overwhelming and filled my heart. Today I share the life of Mr. Lloyd Lawson who passed away September 11th.
What a wonderful person who loved Ottumwa and all things that surrounded it. When I met him before the parade to greet him and thank him he smiled one of the biggest smiles I have ever seen. I then showed him a picture and asked him if he recognized this handsome devil. It was his senior picture from 1944. His face began to shine and he closed his eyes almost as if to dream and when they opened the tears of delight streamed down his face still exhibiting that great big smile I had seen initially. He was surrounded by his loved ones and lots of hugs and love surrounded him.

Thank you Mr. Lawson for your years doing great things in Ottumwa and helping to make this community a better place.

Once a bulldog... ALWAYS a Bulldog. We are grateful.

We had another fabulous day today as we continue to celebrate OHS!
We had a great crowd for OHS building tours, we received so much positive feedback and so much reminicing. Our great OHS staff showed folks around and learned a few things themselves. Then Beach day kicked off at 3pm as the kids ran to the water to enjoy a day of fun and sun. We completed the day with Battle of the Brushes where local artist Roque Toloza Jr took the grand prize trophy with his Bulldog with a cool glow in the dark element. We had 6 artists and made the decision to allow the artwork to dry completely and alumni Marty Helgerson will auction them at 5:30 during the spaghetti supper on Monday night!

Roque Toloza Jr is our Battle of the Brushes winner! His Bulldog has a glow in the dark surprise. Congratulations!
