This has been a long time coming. I'm so pleased to speak with .matters_grant.gibson one of the UK’s leading design, craft and architecture writers. His work has been published in The Observer, New Statesman, The Guardian, Daily Telegraph, and House & Garden, to name just a few. We had a great chat, even tho he never mentioned the word luxury... he did with me

During a long career in magazines, Grant has been editor of Blueprint, deputy editor of FX, and acting executive editor of the RIBA Journal. More recently he has been editor of Crafts and a contributing editor of the Dutch architecture title MARK. He was also the launch editor of the London Design Festival Guide and co-founded Real to Reel, the UK’s first film festival devoted to making.

In 2019, he launched the critically acclaimed podcast, Material Matters with Grant Gibson. Three years later the show was transformed into a new fair at Bargehouse, Oxo Tower Wharf. Material Matters 2023 takes place at Bargehouse, Oxo Tower Wharf from 20-23 September. It's definitely worth a visit.

This week on the In Pursuit of Luxury Podcast we are delighted to revisit our conversation with British Master Tailor, Kathryn Sargent as our finale for Season 7.

Kathryn started her career in the wonderful world of tailoring at Gieves & Hawkes in 1996, rising to the position of Head Cutter, the first woman to do so in the entire history of Savile Row. She founded her own tailoring house in 2012 and is the world’s only female Master Tailor. Breaking tradition, she offers tailoring for both men and women focusing on the needs of the client rather than a set house style.

Join us revisiting this fantastic conversation with Kathryn Sargent to close our season focused on fashion. You can subscribe to get future episodes direct to your device on Spotify, Apple, Google or Amazon Podcasts. You will find a link in our bio.

Early bird tickets are now available for Luxury Endangered, our fantastic conference event at the Oxo Tower on the Southbank in London.

Today we are delighted to announce our first speaker for IPOL 2023, Peter Bellerby. He is the founder of Bellerby & Co Globemakers, the bespoke globemakers based in London.

The company has its roots in Peter's search for a globe for his father’s 80th birthday. Fortunately for us he was unhappy with everything he found on the market, so he set out to make one himself. More than a decade later Peter employs a team of 20 that include cartographers, illustrators, engravers, woodworkers, painters, and makers.

Peter's journey is inspiring, and one that epitomises the drive to preserve dying craft and craftsmanship.

Join us on 1-2 June for Luxury Endangered, where we will have engaging discussions with Peter and other fantastic guest speakers. Please join us and contribute to the conversation.

There’s still time to submit your paper for consideration for Luxury Studies: The In Pursuit of Luxury Journal Special Issue in collaboration with Luxury Plus Summit.

Sustainability, a word never heard in a luxury industry conference a decade ago, is now centre-stage in contemporary discourse. European regulators have declared war on fast fashion forcing a rethink of the throwaway culture that has dominated the 21 st century clothing industry and promising to reshape supply chains that reach deeply into Asia. Technology has opened up new fronts of change too. Synthetic diamonds and leather have entered the luxury world creating new tensions between natural and artificial, as part of the race for environmental salvation.

At the 2022 Luxury Plus Summit in London, we sought to reveal through collective investigation the new frontiers of luxury. Bringing together policy-makers, designers, CEOs, academics and activists we opened the doors to a cross-disciplinary conversation never encountered before at a luxury Summit level. The synthesis of the collective voices has yielded an amazingly rich dialogue.

It is therefore with great pleasure that we invite participants from the entire spectrum of luxury, fashion, economics, consumer behaviour, technology, sustainability and beyond, to submit contributions to this very special edition of the In Pursuit of Luxury Journal, due for release later in 2023.

Deadline for submissions: 31 January 2023

We publish our journal twice a year and welcome submissions directly to the Intellect Books newgen portal. You will find a link in our bio to our website containing more information and guidance how to submit your paper.

Luxury leather goods and alternative leather: Risk and growth opportunities
Luca Solca.

A shift to alternative raw materials is underway and this will offset risks, benefitting the larger groups.”

The Imaginary of Luxury

“In this short article, Patrick Mathieu and Frédéric Monneyron offer a new analysis of luxury they have developed in their noted book, L’Imaginaire du luxe (Imago, 2015). Their study is grounded on the idea that luxury is always a way of keeping death away and that luxury is a matter of images more than objects.”
