What do you need to teach piano?
🎹 This is a multi layered question BUT here are our foundational basics:
- Keyboard or piano in a clean, quiet, and comfortable space
- Passion for playing and learning about music
- Enthusiasm for working with students
Notice we didn't say:
- Degrees/specialized training in it
- The nicest grand piano in one's home
- Complete knowledge about all music genres, theory, and technique
- Ability to play all the hard things
Do we think those things above aren't important? No, not at all.
🎹 However, familiarity and experience with the "traditional" approach to piano learning/teaching doesn't necessarily equate to knowing *how* to teach, inspiring students, growing students' love for music, or making their personal learning journey meaningful.
Making the student's experience at the piano enjoyable, memorable, fun, and inspiring is KEY for side hustle success.

🎹 What is "the perfect piano teacher?"
As many of us know, the "traditional" approach of learning piano has centered around learning classical music and being very theory and skills heavy.
🎹 Here are a few myths we've come across about "the perfect piano teacher:"
- have attained lots of formal training and musical degrees
- knows a lot about classical repertoire and does it with every student
- doesn't encourage learning songs by ear, stuff from Youtube, or pop songs
- makes their students practice for hours every day and memorize all their pieces
- can play really hard music perfectly without making mistakes or practicing too much
If you can do any of the above, great. If not, don't worry.
We don't know if you can tell but the traditional approach comes with a LOT of expectation and pressure - for BOTH teachers and learners.
And that pressure has side lined so many amazing musicians and people from realizing their musical dreams.
🎹 So here's what we think: the perfect piano teacher encourages students' LOVE of playing piano and helps them to learn about and make music.
It's someone who builds a student-centered business. Who supports their students in their personal musical journey and helps them to capitalize on their strengths. And also provide them with skills to learn what they want to learn (video game music, worship songs, lead sheets, Taylor Swift songs, etc, you name it).
Here's the thing: you can always work on the little things (technique, musicality, rhythm, notes, etc) no matter what the content is.
🎹 So don't let yourself be sidelined by myths and let "traditional approaches" hold you back.
If you have a passion for playing music (and put a little structure behind it) and want to support others in their journey, you have the main ingredient for being successful as a piano teacher.

How do you even start making $400+/mo teaching piano? With a little structure and some planning!
Since most piano lessons are typically held in a one on one setting, rates are set like a private lesson with a tutor (higher $/ hour than most part time jobs).
Piano beginner lessons range from 30-45 minutes, so that is the way to approach available time blocks in your schedule.
Next, decide the value of each 30/45 minute time slot (depends on area and other factors) and also how many you need to fill to hit your $ goal/month.
Then you want to notice open time blocks in your current schedule. So, for instance, if you have Mondays free from 6-7:30pm, you could potentially schedule 3 beginner student lessons in that time frame (our program goal is to get you to 5 beginner students per week).
Or if you'd rather spread them out over the week, you could schedule one each week day for one thirty minute time block.
There's no "one way" to do it. But here's the bottom line: getting to $400+/mo is a very achievable goal!

🎹 How do you go from a piano passion to piano profit?
Let's hear the story of our founder and course creator, Natalie.
Natalie played piano for fun growing up but then ended up auditioning for a music school in high school. After being accepted, she studied piano performance for 6 years, she graduated with two degrees, a Bachelors and Masters of Music.
She played lots of classical music but also loved to play her favorite pop songs and movie music on the side.
Somewhere in the middle of these two degrees, she was asked to teach a private piano lesson.
🎶 She soon found that helping students figure out to play their favorite pop song, surprise a loved one with "Happy Birthday," or to finally learn to play "Fur Elise" was incredibly fulfilling.
And here's what Natalie learned most: focusing on content that the student enjoys most will dramatically increase their learning, motivation, and engagement. That in turn will increase their enjoyment, student retention, and recruitment.
☎️ Requests for personal piano lessons with her increased dramatically and her clientele quickly grew. That's when Natalie realized this was an opportunity to build a successful side hustle.
Starting with just five weekly students, Natalie's current in person studio (just a few years later) has over forty weekly students.
She built the The Keys to Side Hustle Success™ training to help you learn to maximize your time and profits at the piano!

When looking for an extra source of income, do you maximize your time? Or do you maximize your earnings?
Once upon a time when working typical part time jobs (restaurant server, office receptionist), we asked ourselves these questions every day.
🕰️ Trading significant time for money means giving up time for yourself, memories with family, and experiences with friends.
💵 On the other hand, not having an adequate source of income or financial resources can lead to stress and not being able to enjoy those moments.
So, do you maximize time? Or money?
We believe you don't have to choose.
With our The Keys to Side Hustle Success™ training, we'll teach you how to get started teaching piano to maximize time and money.
