UNSW Sandbox Society

Our vision is equipping students with career ready skills through team based sandbox modelled projec

Operating as usual

๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ“With final exams starting in just a week, UNSW Sandbox Society will be sharing a few tips with you to keep yourself well-rested and prepped for finals week ๐Ÿ“ ๐Ÿ’™
1. Get plenty of rest and good sleep (aim for those 8 hours rather than all nighters!)๐Ÿ˜ด

2. Create a set study plan ๐Ÿ“– and prioritise what needs to be revised more - that way you can feel more prepared!

3. Take regular breaks in between studying - whether itโ€™s going to get a snack ๐Ÿซor a favourite drink๐Ÿต. These will help improve focus and concentration by feeling more reenergised to start studying againโœจ

4. ๐Ÿ”ฅSpice up๐Ÿ”ฅ your studying by studying with friends and in a group setting

5. Set yourself with small goals to stay motivated and slowly build๐Ÿ› your way up to bigger goals!

USS is proud to announce affiliation with UNSW Business School and Career Accelerator for 2022 ๐Ÿ’™

As a relatively new society, we're extremely proud to have achieved this milestone and would like thank everyone who has supported us. We're excited to see the new heights USS will achieve in the coming years and will continue to enrich the personal and professional development of the UNSW student community.

Humans of USS-

Meet Jeremy Yang! One of our Sandbox project contestants this term studying Bachelor of Architectural Studies. Jeremy joined the Sandbox project hoping to improve his communication skills, collaborate with a variety of people with different experiences, and ultimately come together to create an impactful solution. He particularly loves โ€œestablishing connections with more people and broadening (his) perspectiveโ€.

A goal Jeremy has for himself is to increase the quality of his architectural works by learning new software. He wishes to up-skill his technical abilities so that he may be more flexible and adaptable in the workforce and create exquisite architectural visualisations. He looks forward to using these skills to work on extremely modern and futuristic designs very soon.

Finally, his message to all our members out there is to โ€œbe more confident and embrace the experienceโ€.

Last Sunday USS held our Subcommittee Induction where we welcomed our new members for 2022! We were lucky to receive a range of quality applicants and would like to sincerely thank everyone who applied.โœจ

A big congratulations to all our incoming Subcommittee members of 2022! We had such an amazing time meeting and getting to know you all, and participating in a range of bonding challenges which helped bring us closer!

As a new and growing society, we are thrilled to have you on board to help shape the future visions of USS, and are excited to see you all flourish and grow this year ๐Ÿ’•

On Thursday we held our โ€œCorporate Sustainability Workshopโ€ helping students discover the ways in which people can use technology to address challenges and achieve tangible results on the environment. ๐ŸŒฒ๐Ÿ•Š

During our workshop, we were joined by our very special guest Cass Cross. Cass shared with students the vital impact that environmental, financial and social sustainability plays in shaping and maintaining a brighter, more prosperous, future. ๐Ÿคฉ ๐Ÿš€

We would like to thank Cass Cross for delivering such a profound and enlightening presentation. A recording of this workshop has been posted on our page, so be sure to check that out! Thanks to everyone who attended, and we look forward to seeing you all at our future events! ๐Ÿฅฐ

Humans of USS~

Meet Sreyas! One of our Sandbox project contestants this term studying a Bachelor of Commerce / Information Systems. Sreyas joined the Sandbox project hoping to gain the valuable experiences of collaborating with a diverse range of individuals, building important skills, and working on an Industry challenge. He particularly enjoys โ€œthinking creatively about the direction our solution will go inโ€.โœจ

A goal Sreyas has for himself is to be working in a role that allows him to be creative and solve problems in a meaningful way. Heโ€™s also found ways to use his time more effectively, developing himself through reading books while commuting on trainsโ€ฆ because phones got too boring!

Finally, his message to all our members out there is to โ€œTry your best to be creative and have heaps of fun with othersโฃ๏ธ

Introducing... Our first ever Humans of USS โœจ

Name: Andrew Alexander Suryanto
Degree: Computer Science/Mechatronic Engineering

I was initially convinced by a friend within Sandbox to go ahead and do the project, however as I got to know the project during the induction, I realised something quite remarkable that made me want to pursue the project further, regardless of how busy I currently am, there will be time for it. The thing I realised was the potentially unlimited potential for change possible through getting an audience with the HP representatives and judges. You can say what needs to be said and show the representatives what they need to see in terms of environmental accountability and human rights. The playing field may seem skewed and intimidating initially but in reality, you have nothing to lose and the whole world to gain.

One short term goal that I have for myself would be the development of my techwear business and channel which is still in its early stages. Itโ€™s a place where Iโ€™ll be introducing viewers to skills and crafts often overlooked in favour of more high paying skills while making cool items and designs to possibly manufacture and sell. Iโ€™m hoping that Iโ€™ll be able to reach and inspire many people in a year or two.

One long term goal I have would be to fight my way up the corporate ladder in my professional office career to get to a position in a big tech company advising on the ethics of artificial intelligence and preventing potential abuses of such technology. I plan to have both my business and my professional career running at the same time, allowing me to take risks in both areas without fear while both areas indirectly support each other.

One thing Iโ€™ve been doing for personal development would be generally broadening my horizons to all kinds of people and getting differing perspectives on uni, work, relationships and life in general. I find talking to individuals from different walks of life, especially those further down the path than I am or completely opposite to me very insightful and enlightening. You just never know what someoneโ€™s made of before you talk to them and figure out what makes them tick.

You have dreams? Great! Awesome. You are phenomenal. Go pursue them. The only one that can really stop you is yourself.

There is no excuse โ€œI donโ€™t have enough timeโ€. If you really wanted to do something, youโ€™d make time for it. That just means you donโ€™t want it enough.

You have no dreams? Take a step back from your life and find out what you enjoy doing and why. Then figure out how you can use that to the benefit of yourself, your environment and to others around you. From an early age I knew I wanted to be an inventor of some sort as I liked tinkering with stuff and making stuff with my hands. Then I figured coding would be an avenue where I could do that professionally, after which I also found out sewing wasnโ€™t that hard too which set my sights on all the other craftsman-like skills where you make things. Then I figured that I could also help others by letting people view me on my journey in hopes theyโ€™d be inspired by it, birthing my short term goal above.

You find yourself in a cushy privileged position, where your future is basically set and there isnโ€™t a single obstacle in your path to success paved with overwhelming funds and nepotism? Perhaps you could take the bold leap to step out of your comfort zone and leverage your power to help those that are less fortunate up. I myself, found myself landing an internship at a tech company before I even started university, consequently landing myself a job there the following year and Iโ€™ve taken it upon myself to put my capital towards my channel with the goal of inspiring others as well, for a worth living is a life with meaning.

Now then. I think that is all I have to say. Whoever you are, wherever you are, I know you have the potential to go far if you set your mind on it.

If you ever see me on campus, come and say hi! Iโ€™m more than willing to stop for a chat!

Best Wishes ~ Andrew Suryanto
