2022 Holiday Invitational. Parents and athletes, here are the pics that I was able to get. If any parents have additional pics of athletes, please share here. I wasn't able to get around like usual so I was limited to those events I could see from my seat.
The Dolphin Indoor track team traveled to Birmingham Saturday to begin its long awaited 2022 – 2023 campaign. The sprint and field squad made waves.
“I’m really excited about this year’s indoor team,” said head coach Jason Hill. “We had several young kids and newcomers step up in a big way.”
In her first career competition ever, Lydia Reno blasted a throw of 29 feet 7 and ¾ inches, putting the shot further than any Dolphin ever! Reno met the 5A state qualifying standard and placed 12th out of 75 competitors.
Morgan McCartney and Lily Zlab are not new to track and field, having performed at a high level for several years. Saturday, they too met the 5A state qualifying standard by jumping 4 feet 8 inches in the high jump, each threateningly close to 4’10”, and tied for 11th place out of 42 competitors.
Another competitor in his first hurdle race ever and his first indoor track meet ever, Brady Cook qualified for state in the 60 m hurdles, running 10.44 seconds. Cook competes in the horizontal and vertical jumps as well and will fill a serious void for the contending Dolphins.
The boys 4x200 team of Brady Cook, Tristan Conway, Grant Bradford, and Andrew Roman also ran a state qualifying time of 1 minute and 43 seconds. Roman’s time of 55.30 in the 400 was also fast enough to qualify.
The only distance competitor at the meet was senior Jacey Hughes who ran 6:25 for a state qualifying time. The remainder of the distance squad will compete at their first meet with the full team on January 7th.
All qualifiers need to finish in the top 16 in the state to advance to the state finals.
Other competitors competing well included Abigail Chamblin finishing 23rd overall in the shot put and freshman Daniel Foster who threw a PR 37 feet 6 ½ inches in the shot.
