A Baseball Life
I am a former Professional Baseball player who has a passion for training others on skills I have obtained through years of guidance and practice, from some of the best coaches the game has ever seen.
My career began as an Iselin AA All-Star where I was nicknamed “Wildthing” for all the right reasons, and yes my team always sang the Major League song when I was hitting good. After little league days were over, I was able to become a Left-Handed Pitcher and Outfielder at JFK High School in Iselin, NJ. I was a 2x All-State Baseball and Soccer performer who received Varsity Letters in three sports my Freshman year of High School. But as the years went by, and I was heading into my senior year of High School, it was time to make a decision on where I wanted to focus my energy so I can succeed as an athlete, and clearly, I chose baseball. After the summer of 2001, I had offers to pitch (18-1 in HS) at Seton Hall University and St. John’s University, but decided I wanted to be an everyday player. Coaches Glen Gardner and Fred Hill from Rutgers University showed an interest in me patrolling the outfield in Piscataway. Hill and Gardner would come to my games, talk to me afterwards, and showed not only interest in me as a player, but me as a person. This meant a lot to me and my family, and after going to one Showcase (Selectfest) in the summer of 2001, I officially signed a Letter of Intent to play at RU! My hard work had payed off, and I received a scholarship to play and become a Scarlett Knight for life. My senior year was all about Sports, I went on to win the Greater Middlesex County Athlete of the Year Award in 2002, presented by The Home News Tribune. The Baseball team eventually went on to win our fourth consecutive GMC Division Championship which did not come easy. I went to battle on the mound twice against MLB Pitcher Kevin Mulvey, and managed to get the win on both occasions which was the highlight of our season with a young team. Thank you to all my great high school teammates, love you guys!
Playing at Rutgers was unbelievable, we went on to win the Big East Regular Season Championship my freshman year and made the NCAA tournament, where we played the Regionals at Florida State University against Stephen Drew. From 2005-2006, I was a two-time Captain and two time All Big-East honoree as a Scarlet Knight, and was chosen to play one summer in the Cape Cod Collegiate Summer Baseball League for the Chatham A’s (now Anglers) in 2004. It was really amazing to play with current and former MLB players Todd Frazier, Andrew Miller, Jeff Frazier, and Jack Egbert on a consistent basis as we always pushed each other to get better behind the scenes. Some of my closest friends at RU include Mike Bionde, Joe Baione, and John Defendis, two of which own and operate their own Baseball facilities and the other who has more passion for the game of baseball than anyone I’ve ever met. Thank you to all my great college teammates, love you guys!
After not being selected in the 2006 Amateur Draft (after being advised I would go on Day 2) it would of been easy to just hang the cleats up and call it a career, but I wasn’t done yet. In November of 2006, my close friend Jeff Long (who Defendis and I had met playing summer ball in New England in 2003) contacted me and asked if I wanted to come to Spring Training in Kalamazoo, Michigan, to try out for the then Kalamazoo Kings (Indy Ball). I thought to myself where the heck is Kalamazoo, Michigan, but got prepared to give it everything I had. I took up offers to go to tryouts with the Phillies and Brewers, neither of which played out well as both teams may have taken one pitcher out of the 200 players invited. When May of 2007 rolled around, it was time for me to get the opportunity I needed, and it was a two-week tryout, not a one day money grab like the affiliated tryouts. To this day my Manager from 2007-2009, Fran Riordan, will tell you I was 8 out of 8 on the depth chart for Outfielders when camp opened up. Every guy there was over 6’3 and could either run like the wind or had insane power. But none had an arm like I did, or could get to almost every ball in the outfield, and most of all, none had the heart that I had. Two stressful weeks in the Red Roof Inn and two hits a day later, the 21 year old kid from Jersey who could make consistent contact and play above average defense made the team. I went on to hit .314 my Rookie year of Indy Ball in the Frontier League while making the All-Star Team. I hit more homers in my first year of pro ball then I did in four years of college, I guess some would say certain people hit better with wood, and that felt right for me. I met so many amazing people and have so many great memories in Kalamazoo, from Joe Rosenhagen and Sherry Oliver, to Brandon Anderson and Simon Williams, I was so blessed to have met you all.
My final season was certainly not my best, especially coming off season ending thumb surgery in 2009, but I got to play back in Jersey for a professional baseball team called the New Jersey Jackals. I got to play in front of the people who were there for me my entire career, and to me that was very special, especially for my parents and close friends. But after the 2010 season with the Jackals, unfortunately it was time for me to move on and officially hang up the cleats. The 2007-2010 seasons were the best part of my baseball career, I had the time of my life, and I finally understood what it meant to play Professional Baseball!
I have played with and against some of the best players in the world and always felt I could hold my own, but it never came without hard work and amazing coaches who pushed me and showed me the way. So now it’s my time to give back, it’s my time to pass on the knowledge and wisdom I have obtained throughout my baseball career, and I just couldn’t be more excited about the opportunity to work with parents, players, and coaches who love baseball. Now Let’s Get Better, together.
