UPDATES from DOB CAMP!!
Camp began June 17th. We offered Theatre, Voice, Ballet, Tap, Jazz/Modern, Traditional West Aftican, & Creative Writing. Among our Teachers was the amazing who cultivated beautiful sounds from these young campers. .m.mitchell who turned our campers into tap enthusiasts.
During camp I secured a partnership with the Department of Parks & Recreation Street Theatre Camp which allowed to
1) employ young artists of high school - college age. (Could be your teen next!!)
2) bring my DOB campers to experience Street Theatre on specific days of theg week.
As a result, 1) one DOB Camper was able to audition and get casted in the Street Theatre play 'The Crossroads'.
2) I serve as choreographer on the project. My younger campers have featured cameos in the production and will be the opening for the full performance in September.
3) I was able to move my camp to Duke Ellington School of the Arts where we rehearse in state of the art dance and theatre spaces.
4) My campers are exposed to phenomenal people daily. For example, yesterday was Ms. Dubose, the woman who originally a part of Street Theatre with Mike Malone and Peggy West who are the founders and creators of Duke Ellington School of the Arts. Today was Mrs. Bain, the woman who was the publicist for Venus and Serena as they were making their rise well into their adult life and the publicist, president of MJ records, and all things for Michael Jackson until he transitioned.
5) Duke Ellington School of the Arts will be celebrating their 50th year where our partnership (DOB AND DPR) will perform again and I will facilitate a ring shout for the alumni and current students.
6) We will also perform for Art All Night DC and co-create a Black History show and performance for Feb. The ballooning of opportunities are taking flight and taking off.
DOB is having classes throughout the school year this year. We will have classes Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday from 4:45pm - 6pm. If you are interested please send a separate message. I will also post again with registration links. It has been a super progressive Summer. Be sure to get your young artist involved soon!!
