Leading is about them, not about you. And Lao-Tzu was a smart guy! The legendary Chinese philosopher who is said to have lived a few hundred years BC (some say around the 6th century BC, others around the 4th century BC) knew very well what leadership is all about: nurturing the self-esteem, enhancing the capabilities, and ensuring the motivation of your team members – the people who do the job. If they perform well, you will perform well as a leader.

bean #7: Showing care for the person, taking charge, and maintaining the spirit: What employees want from their in times of the COVID-19 crisis

Psychologists have tried to identify which leadership behaviours were seen as the most helpful ones from an employee perspective during the COVID-19 pandemic.

They found that attending to the person, taking charge and showing the way forward, and sustaining the spirit were the leadership behaviours that were most valued by employees.

What do people expect from a leader?

A Gallup research that involved over 10,000 people identified four basic needs of “followers”: trust, compassion, stability and hope.

Trust and stability are the foundation – that´s why leaders need to be clear, predictable, and honest. But we also need leaders who dare – dare to make decisions (sometimes also unpopular ones) that open the way to a better future. This gives us hope. Why would we ever want to follow leaders who are not able to give us hope for a better future?

And finally, there´s compassion – good leaders give their “followers” the feeling that they really care for them and for their well-being. The Gallup research results show that employees who feel that someone cares about them at work are more productive and much more likely to stay with their organizations. Good leaders care.

Are you following a clear as a leader? Many leaders overwhelm their team members with new initiatives. They want to show that they are “active,” that they are driving the organization forward. But do all those initiatives really serve the organization´s core purpose? Do they really make things better? Do they contribute to the ?

Smart leaders don´t immerse themselves in “activity addiction.” They are taking a step back from time to time to consider how they can really best serve the purpose of their organization.

Here is our first leaderspresso book tip of the month for November 2021 – “Open Strategy: Mastering Disruption from Outside the C-Suite” by Christian Stadler, Julia Hautz, Kurt Matzler and Prof. Dr. Stephan Friedrich von den Eichen.

Smart leaders involve a wider group of both employees and experts from outside the organization in strategy development processes to create better strategies (as a higher diversity of perspectives will result in more unique strategic ideas) and facilitate strategy implementation (due to higher level of commitment of those who are included in the strategy process).

bean #4: What leaders regret the most

Leaders need to make a lot of choices, and every choice has opportunity costs attached to it (otherwise it would not be a choice in the first place). This, however, also means that there is potential for regret inherent in every choice.

45 top managers from life science firms in the USA were interviewed by Helen Mary Meldrum about their “most memorable regrets” related to their management and leadership role.

From time to time, we would also like to provide you with some thought-provoking leadership quotes here on leaderspresso. Let us start with a wise guy from ancient Rome: Seneca the Younger, the Stoic philosopher and statesman.

Fear of failure is a strong driving force for leaders, a driving force that often leads to indecisiveness, control mania and an inability to trust other people. Brené Brown in her book Dare to Lead argues that we need more courageous leaders – people who take a stand for their values, who trust themselves and others, who have the courage to be vulnerable.

What do you think: Do we need more leaders who dare more?

bean #3: What leaders can learn from a racing sailboat skipper

There are many similarities between boat racing and managing an organization in a fast-changing environment. In both cases, there are clear goals (to win!), time pressure, and a need for coordinated action that allows the team to quickly react to the changes in the environment and to be faster and better than the competition.

Hi everyone! Welcome to leaderspresso!

A hot cup of espresso can do wonders for your mood, your motivation, and your energy levels – and that’s what a good leader can do, too. Great leaders can have an incredibly positive impact on the lives of other people, just like bad leaders can cause so much damage.

We firmly believe that our world needs more good leaders. That’s why we are launching our new leaderspresso blog (www.leaderspresso.com) and the leaderspresso social media profiles as a platform for sharing insights about good leadership.

There are many scholars who conduct highly interesting research about what leaders do, and about how their actions affect their followers and the success of their organizations. Much of this research is quite difficult to access, however, and sometimes also quite hard to understand – even for insiders. It often remains hidden, although there would be so much to learn from it.

We are passionate about making leadership research more accessible for leaders and learners who want to know the essence in a short time. With leaderspresso, we would like to offer curious practicing and aspiring leaders with short and easy-to read summaries of the most relevant findings of current leadership research (including key takeaways that you can apply right away). Just like with an espresso, it will take just a few seconds to get a quick shot of new leadership knowledge in concentrated form.

From time to time, we will also provide you with some book tips (when new leadership books include noteworthy ideas that we believe could also make a difference for your leadership role), as well as some inspiring and maybe also thought-provoking leadership quotes.

We – the founding team behind leaderspresso – are a graphic artist (Eva Kobin) and a management professor (Dietmar Sternad) with extensive experience in leadership roles as well as in teaching and coaching aspiring and practicing leaders. We both really care about good leadership – and we both love espresso, too!

It would be great if you could also join the discussion on leaderspresso and share your own thoughts about good leadership. If you have any tips about highly interesting new leadership research or books that we missed out, please let us know!

Let us together explore what good leadership is all about! Enjoy reading our “leadership beans” over a good cup of espresso and be inspired by new food for thought!
