๐Ÿ‘‰ Universal Hydrogen, the pioneering company that flew a partially hydrogen-powered flight in March last year, has burned through the $100 million it raised from investors and gone bust: article in

๐Ÿ›ฉ๏ธ Universalโ€™s team designed its hydrogen-powered propulsion system so it could be retrofitted on regional airplanes. And it worked on developing an ecosystem at airports whereby hydrogen would be delivered by trucks in large cylindrical modules that could be loaded directly onto the planes.

๐Ÿš› The company had to both engineer a hydrogen-powered propulsion system and create from scratch a new logistics infrastructure that could deliver the hydrogen fuel at airports.

โœˆ๏ธ It also had to deal with the reality that hydrogen fuel takes up a lot more space on the airplane than jet fuel, reducing room for passengers.

โšก Another huge barrier is that it depended on a large, reliable supply of whatโ€™s known as โ€œgreen hydrogen.โ€ Green hydrogen has to be produced using electricity from renewable sources such as wind or solar to make the process emission-free. Most of the hydrogen used today is produced from natural gas in a process high in carbon-dioxide emissions. Very little green hydrogen is currently produced, and scaling it up will take large investments.

๐Ÿ’ฒDocuments viewed by show that negotiations for $20 million in funding from a Saudi investment fund fell through. Private equity firms appear to have cooled to the concept due to higher interest rates and constant fears of an impending recession.

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ An additional headwind was the nearing U.S. election. โ€œIf Trump were to win, investors saw a significant risk that the massive green hydrogen subsidy enacted as part of the Biden Inflation Reduction Act would disappear,โ€ Paul Eremenko, former CEO of Universal Hydrogen wrote.

โ“What do Safe Landing followers think about the future of hydrogen aviation, given this news?

โ›ฝ The UK Government recently released itsย โ€˜Sustainable Aviation Fuelโ€™ (โ€˜SAFโ€™) Mandateย that will set annual targets on aviation fuel suppliers to blend a proportion of alternative jet fuel into their conventional jet fuel supply.

๐Ÿ˜Ž This optimistic vision of โ€œsustainableโ€ fuels soundsย fantasticย for our industry: these fuels will reduce aviation emissions and we can continue with business-as-usual air traffic growth, brushing aside any suggestions about limiting flights. We can create lots of new jobs, and all of this can be done without increasing the cost of air travel. This all sounds very appealing if youโ€™re an aviation worker. Whatโ€™s not to like?

โœˆ๏ธ Our community has broad concerns with the emphasis that our industry places on so-called โ€˜SAFโ€™ as the main lever for reducing aviationโ€™s climate impact.

โ›ฝ We prefer to avoid using the term โ€˜SAFโ€™ as it implies that any such fuel is by definition โ€˜sustainableโ€™. We prefer to use the term โ€˜Alternative Jet Fuelโ€™ instead to refer to any alternative to conventional jet fuel. We believe this neutral wording does a better job at representing the reality of these fuels.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Weโ€™re concerned that announcements related to Alternative Jet Fuels are a convenient distraction for industry leaders to avoid talk about dealing withย fossil jet fuelย and the need to address industry growth in the near-term. If we want to be able to fly at all in the future, we'll need to address these issuesย immediately.

๐Ÿช™ We urgently need policies specifically targeting aย reduction in fossil jet fuel use, such as aviation carbon budgets and higher pricing of aviation emissions.

๐Ÿค” Rather than have an honest discussion about those policies, this โ€˜SAFโ€™ mandate seems to allow fossil jet fuel use to continue to grow, while permitting airlines to use the cheapest, least scalable alternative jet fuel in large quantities. This appears to have been done cynically to keep air travel costs artificially cheap, for as long as possible, in order to avoid difficult conversations about air traffic growth and airport expansion.

Specifically, us at Safe Landing were advocating for Workers' Assemblies to empower workers to contribute to how our industry transforms by early design rather than late disaster.

Aviation leaders have very short term interests whereas workers are in the industry for the long haul. It's time we gave them a proper say on how our industry tackles the climate and nature crisis.

โœŠ NAE PASARAN โœŠ

โš” 50 years ago (11 Sept 1973) a military coup overthrew the democratically elected government in and created a brutal two-decade dictatorship.

โœˆ A group of UK aerospace workers took action against that regime, in solidarity with workers in Chile.

โ˜  The Chilean dictatorship under August Pinochet crushed unions and jailed, tortured and murdered thousands of trade unionists as well as political opposition. It also pioneered what today we call 'neoliberal' economic policies.

๐Ÿ›  From 1974-1978, four workers ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ”ง ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ”ง ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ”ง ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ”ง at the Rolls-Royce factory in East Kilbride, Scotland โ€“ Bob Fulton, John Keenan, Robert Somerville and Stuart Barrie โ€“ took industrial action, refusing to service and repair engines for the Chilean Airforceโ€™s British made Hawker Hunter jets.

๐Ÿ“ฝ Their story is told in the film 'Nae Pasaran', which can now be watched online for free: https://linktr.ee/naepasaran. (The phrase 'No Pasaran!' translates to 'They shall not pass!' and 'Nae Pasaran!' is the phrase with a Scot's twist...)

โœŠ We now know that these workersโ€™ action had a major effect on the Chilean Airforce. In any case it was a tremendous act of solidarity and internationalism, showing workers can take effective action for much wider causes as well as their immediate interests.

โค๏ธ There have been other inspiring examples of such action too, as our blog explains: https://safe-landing.org/power-of-workers/

๐ŸŒŽ The spirit in which the East Kilbride Rolls-Royce workers organised is just the spirit workers need in the local, national and international fight for justice โ€“ including climate justice โ€“ today.

๐Ÿ™ On the anniversary of the coup in Chile we honour those who resisted the dictatorship โ€“ including the Scottish aerospace workers who took action in international solidarity.

๐Ÿœ Climate campaigning often feels like a David vs. Goliath fight against an industry with massive resources at their disposal. It's easy to feel overwhelmed: We're like ants being stamped on.

๐ŸŽฏ The inspiring story of "Nae Pasaran!" demonstrates that if we carefully aim our slingshot, we can take down the giant. We have more power than we often imagine!

Summer strike action announced at Gatwick Airport in pay dispute 18/07/2023

28 July-8 August almost 1,000 workers at will strike against poverty pay.

Labour movement and climate activists must mobilise in solidarity!

We'll get an email for messages but meanwhile send to [email protected] and we will pass on.

The workers, in ground handling, baggage handling, dispatching, check-in and other roles, are employed by ASC, Menzies Aviation, GGS and DHL Services Ltd. They are paid on average *under ยฃ12ph*, despite the demanding and safety critical jobs they do.

During the pandemic, many companies at Gatwick Airport made large-scale redundancies and cut the pay and conditions of their remaining staff.

The workers are members of Unite the Unions. Its General Secretary said: "Our members at Gatwick Airport undertake incredibly demanding roles and are essential to keeping the airport and airlines working, yet their employers somehow think it is acceptable to pay them a pittance."

The workers will strike initially for four days, Friday 28 July ending on Tuesday 1 August. Then a further four days from Friday 4 August until Tuesday 8 August.

We will be going to support them! If you'd like to come with us, message us or email: [email protected]
