Meet the Faculty! Leigh Uhlir is the Associate Dean of Kendall College of Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management at National Louis University and an alumni of Kendall College (02’). She is a leader in the hospitality industry, with decades of experience in restaurant management and operations, working for some of the nation’s leading hospitality companies and restaurants: Four Seasons Hotel in Chicago, Lettuce Entertain You, and Fidelio—MICROS division in Austin, Chicago and Las Vegas. Throughout her career, she has been an innovator who takes a strategic approach to building stronger, more resilient businesses by rethinking processes and business models. Prof. Uhlir will show how an adaptability mindset will help hospitality businesses be more competitive in any business environment.
Meet the Faculty! Ted Mandigo is a professor emeritus at Kendall College at National Louis University. He has taught hospitality finance, feasibility and operations and has operated an industry-focused consulting firm for more than 35 years. Ted brings a unique perspective and knowledge of financial strategies that hospitality businesses can use to weather the current crisis and restore operations to profitability. Meet the Faculty! Paul F. Romer will lead the risk management and risk reduction module of the Resilient Leadership in Hospitality course. He brings considerable professional expertise based on the successful turnaround of four middle market businesses from significant challenges to profitability. Two of these middle market businesses were in the events industry and Paul collaborated with his management team to develop effective business plans which he implemented to success.
Particularly relevant to the Covid-19 challenge, Paul worked at the National Safety Council which is the nation’s largest advocate for safety in the workplace, on the roads and in communities. At the National Safety Council, he learned how important it is to develop a proactive risk management plan to put into place to address the inherent risks and potential hazards in a business or an environment. In August 2020, Paul successfully completed the Global Biorisk Advisory Council online Fundamentals Training Course with an emphasis on SARS-CoV-2/Covid-19. Meet the Faculty! Michael Krause, C.H.A., CHIA, MSEd, is an Assistant Professor of Hospitality and Tourism Management. He brings a wealth of industry experience to his teaching, drawing from 30+ years of hotel management, tourism and related association involvement. His insights on how to navigate the smooth, and sometimes rough, waters of the industry provide references to contemporary thinking for hospitality industry. The challenges of the current pandemic have created new needs for hospitality professionals. Drawing on the lessons learned from current and past disruptions, Professor Krause will discuss how to rebuild guest trust and loyalty in response to immediate challenges and how to connect and respond realistically to changing guest and staff expectations, including using current technologies to communicate enhanced safety protocols to future guests. He predicts that lessons learned from the current crisis will become part of the everyday landscape of hospitality teams.

His passion for this industry is partly fueled from the thrilling and ever-changing dynamics that are required to continually adapt in order to remain competitive. During challenging times, resilient managers are often proactive and pragmatic as they adapt the company culture and their strategies to the demands of the business climate. Having a well-developed company culture will harness the strengths and diverse skill-set of its employees at all levels and in all positions within the organization. In module 2, John will share his perspective in building a unified organizational culture that consists of having shared beliefs and values that work to shape employee behaviors and ultimately, the guest’s experience. Meet the Faculty! Deborah Popely, DBA, leads the faculty team that will deliver Resilient Leadership for Hospitality. She is an experienced business leader with more than 30 years experience in the industry. A student and teacher of leadership, she became interested in resilience as a result of her own experience with fluctuating business cycles and market disruptions. Professor Popely will share evidence-based insights on resilience as a leadership characteristics and how individuals and organizations can develop resilience in Module 1 of the course.

Resilient Leadership in Hospitality is a new continuing education course offered by Kendall College that explores the leadership, cultural, risk management, innovation, stakeholder engagement, and financial challenges currently facing the hotel, food service, events and tourism industries and presents the knowledge, skills and abilities hospitality professionals need to act effectively in an environment of change and uncertainty.
The hospitality industry is experiencing unprecedented disruption due to the COVID-19 virus and some businesses are facing an existential challenge.
