Freediving Courses & Training in Kona, Hawai'i with veteran ocean lifeguard, surfer, & teacher, Julia

It’s not easy at a young age to wrap your head around the seriousness & responsibility we carry as divers in a community where the leading cause of water-related deaths among locals has been freediving & spearfishing — but today’s class of students with showed up early on their Saturday morning, eager, gracious, & excited to learn. 🙌🏽

It’s an injustice & a tragedy that in a state that generates so much money, many local kids lack access to lifesaving education & tools that would allow them to recreate, subsist off of, & connect to their community’s ocean safely. Most of today’s students had either personally experienced a close call with a blackout, or were personally affected by one of the many preventable tragedies in our community. After today, they are properly trained in basic freediving safety, & understand how to anticipate, recognize, & respond to hypoxic incidents like blackouts & near-blackouts. It was really special seeing their eyes light up with excitement for the opportunity to learn & be empowered with this lifesaving knowledge. 🙏🏽

Today’s training meant the world to these kids & their families — thank you to & its passionate leader , whose commitment to this mission is changing headlines, saving countless lives, & imparting kids with a connection to the ocean that will likely shape the rest of their lives. Her work changes our lives as instructors too as we get to witness & be part of this growth. ❤️

Every child in Hawai’i deserves a healthy, supportive environment & the knowledge to subsist from & recreate in the ocean safely.

Congratulations on your new three prong from !!! 😱

Freediving doesn’t just take us to a depth beneath the surface — it takes us to a place inside ourselves.

A place where calm meets courage; a place that leaves me confounded by the ocean’s power to reveal the power that exists inside ourselves. Our bodies can do incredible things when we meet the strength of our own minds.

Humans need the ocean, scientifically, in so many physical & biological ways, but when I freedive, I feel a sense that it’s intrinsically connected to who we are and our relationships on Earth. Yes, the ocean gives us life, but I feel like more than that, it brings life to what it means to be alive: To be connected to ourselves & others.

In eroding the natural world, we’ve lost a part of ourselves, & in the ocean, I feel that missing piece heal. 🫶 I feel reunited with what it means to be alive in this world. 🖤

Freediving offers a special connection to the ocean & ourselves — that connection starts with the relationships we build with our dive partners.

Our relationship with our dive partners is literally the foundation of everything we experience freediving — it’s the difference between loving this sport safely & sharing unimagineable underwater experiences together because you’re both properly trained & practicing direct supervision; or suffering a tragic, permanent loss that could have been easily prevented with the knowledge & skills acquired in a 2 day long class.

It’s the difference between telling their loved ones stories of joy from your day in the water together, or telling their loved ones you lost them forever.

This is my dive partner, Alyssa. One week after taking her Lv. 1 Freedive class, she saved my life. That we are still diving together, smiling in the ocean & living our joyful lives, is the difference I’m referring to above.

We weren’t freediving, but I think our story shows the significance of proper training & how profoundly ocean safety education impacts our lives. There’s no words that can describe how scary it is to find yourself so immediately humbled by the ocean — 7 years of ocean lifeguarding, a lifetime of surfing & swimming, a decade working in ocean safety — one rock to the head was all it took. The ocean doesn’t discriminate & it can humble anyone — Alyssa’s presence, training & supervision saved my life. Her course prepared her to respond effectively amidst the stress of seeing her friend floating face down, unconscious & unresponsive in the water.

If you want to experience a special connection to the ocean, start by building strong relationships with dive partners that are rooted in proper safety training & real trust/respect. We can’t control the ocean, but we can equip ourselves to mitigate the risks that accompany her beautiful wildness & untamable nature.

Join me with your buddy, or meet properly trained buddies, in one of my upcoming courses:
Lv. 1 July 8th - 9th, 2 spots
Junior Freediver, July 27th-28th, FULL
Lv. 1 July 23rd - 24th, 2 spots
Lv. 1 September 16th-17th, 2 spots

Watching students grow in their own unique ways — from their overall aquatic ability, confidence, and comfort; to their knowledge of hypoxic incidents & ability to execute lifesaving safety skills — is the greatest gift this sport has given me. Big smiles all around because these Lv. 1 Freedive students grew so much over the course of just 2 days & I got experience it with them!!! 🫶🥰

As hard as most freedivers try to “dive within our limits,” the reality is that blackouts can happen to any diver, on any day, on any dive, at shallow depths, & there are simply too many variables to account for — from our diet, stress level, sleep & beyond — to effectively mitigate the risk of a blackout or other hypoxic incident occurring. We CAN however choose to equip ourselves with proper freediving safety education & gain a skillset that is literally lifesaving. It’s not hard information to learn, but it’s not intuitive, & it needs to be learned in a structured, standardized environment with hands-on repetition & practice.

Modern freediving education saves lives — sign up for a summer class with your dive partner & get trained on how to recognize & respond to hypoxic incidents so that everyone gets to continue enjoying a sport we love & go home safe. Spots open in my courses July 8-9th & July 22nd-23rd in Kona! 🙌🏽

The most beautiful riches in the world already exist.

A progressive, “developed” society as we call ourselves in the West doesn’t plunder shared wealth and exploit others for individual gain — it cherishes, appreciates, and protects the richness it already contains. It understands that our richness grows from interdependency, reciprocal relationships, & diversity; and that to “other” or harm another, is to “other” and harm ourselves. Beauty is the byproduct of resilient relationships and connection to each another. 🫶

Freediving, for me, is a form of peace that connects me to this truth. Exploring underwater is like living art: everywhere we look, reciprocal relationships abound, creating the vibrant communities that jar our imaginations and captivate our hearts. The health of these communities — for instance, coral reefs — impacts the health of communities that reef inhabitants don’t even know exist; as carbon sequestration and oxygen production that occurs in our oceans impacts the climate and weather systems of the rest of the planet. Most humans can’t see past the social space we inhabit either — but what if, knowing our fates are shared, we built just, sustainable communities that positively impact those we can’t see?

I believe the ocean captivates us with its beauty to offer us solutions. We can’t separate ourselves from each other when we live in a shared, interconnected system, and whether we realize it or not, we feel this truth every time we admire something we love underwater. I believe the challenges we face as a global society are asking us to grow.

Humans will never “save” the planet — Earth will continue to exist — but maybe the planet can help save us from ourselves. 🙏🏽🐢💙

A love letter to the ocean

The deepest sense of joy I feel in my life has come not through avoidance of uncomfortable feelings & hard experiences, but through the freedom of surrendering to them & letting go.

It’s so liberating to just be who we are, wherever we are — and wherever I’ve been, the ocean has always been there for me.

The ocean taught me that love makes us resilient, because when you truly love something, you become unbreakable. The overwhelming defeat of an abusive relationship intertwined with my dreams & a serious brain injury couldn’t suppress that love, even when I felt broken.

If you really love something… keep going. Sometimes our hardest moments make love shine brighter.😌

We adapt our bodies & minds to depth, & then, the depths change us forever. 🖤 Post-freedive smiles just shine brighter.

My experience freediving has been that in the depths of the ocean, we meet ourselves. I’ve loved diving all my life, but took my first course when I was trapped in an abusive relationship on an isolated island in a foreign country & could not leave.

For months, I’d been cut down & forced into a world of fear, fighting a nightmare within a lifelong dream. The ocean was the only place where my life was quiet.

He tried to keep me out of the water, but he couldn’t break my fins or follow me underwater. There came a point where he took so much away from me that I couldn’t recognize my own reflection in the mirror… but underwater, I could be connected to myself, & I remembered who I am. The connection I felt to myself during my dives in that freediving course changed the trajectory of my entire life.

Taking myself to new depths on a single breath awakened a light he dimmed within me. I fought the hard battle to escape, left everything behind, took a leap of faith towards an uncertain horizon, & chased my forever dream of becoming an instructor, now with the added goal to share the indescribable feeling that freediving gave me at the worst moment of my life with others.

We are capable of so much more than we realize. Underwater, I feel connected to a strength that we all carry, that propels us through hardship and towards our dreams. He couldn’t crush my spirit for the ocean because I was born to share this love with others.

📸: Thanks of for capturing my love for the sea, I forgive you for spitting your snorkel water in my face 1000 times in the past 10 days :’)

Students practicing proper warm-ups on the line to kickstart our body’s dive response, practice equalization, & maximize comfort underwater. 🧜🏽‍♀️💪🏽

A proper warm-up is one of the many skills you learn in a Level 1 Freediving course, alongside learning the proper technique & safety skills to gain comfort underwater & progress your diving. We focus on proper technique as opposed to “chasing depth,” because depth is a byproduct of proper technique & safety. This instills a mindset of safe depth progression that will make you a better, safer diver. 🙏🏽

All of us contain the innate aquatic potential to develop these skills — whether you’re brand new, or freedive already & want to hone your skills, these classes provide foundational education for all breathhold divers. 🧜🏽‍♀️🧜‍♂️🌊

Level 1 Freediving Courses in Kona:
- March 17th to 19th
- April 7th to 9th
- May 6th to May 8th
+ Privates available by request.

So many of humanity’s challenges stem from our efforts to control & sterilize the perceived disorder of the world we live in — & yet, in the ocean’s untamed wildness, I feel calm.

The depths of the ocean stole my heart the first time they brought me into this feeling, & watching the same process transpire within my students has added new depths to my existing affinity for the ocean.

There’s so much human-induced chaos in our disordered, “orderly” world on land. The ocean is unpredictable, & in its presence, we are thrust into feeling vulnerable… but also, connected to ourselves & the ecosystems that support life, in a way that western society has erased & forgotten.💧🌱 Watching the ocean’s capacity to transform people’s lives, including my own, is the most empowering thing I will ever witness. 💙

I’m so grateful for freediving & the gift of sharing it with others. ✨Upcoming Level 1 Freediving Classes:
March 17th to 19th
April 7th to April 9th
May 6th to May 8th
(Friday evening - Sunday)

📸: Thank you to the talented for eternalizing the moments underwater that I love so deeply.

Connect to yourself & your innate aquatic potential. 🌊💧🧜🏽‍♀️

Learning to freedive breaks barriers between ourselves, the ocean, & what we think is possible. It’s a beautiful process to watch students break through their unique limitations & achieve a state of comfort in their diving, through the F.I.I. system of theory, hands-on practice, & technique-focused education.

While a Level 1 Freediving Class offers the tools to dive to 20 meters/66 ft, I don’t advertise depth
because the focus of the course is technique, theory, comfort, & safety — depth progression comes with mastery of these elements.

Learning to freedive isn’t about hitting a depth on our dive watch or a mark on the line, or “conquering” anything at all — It’s an experience of internal awareness & commitment to proper safety & technique that teleports us to the places we want to go.💧The more comfortable & attuned we are to the unique processes happening in our bodies, the more deeply we can connect to the world below.

Freediving courses in Kona are posted for March, April, & May. 🌊🌺🧜🏽‍♀️ Private courses available by request.

The vulnerability of diving beneath the surface on a single breath can feel intimidating & jarring — like we’re entering a deep, mysterious world where we don’t belong.

Ironically, what makes the ocean scary also makes it profoundly beautiful — one of the most rewarding components of learning to freedive is finding comfort in immense vulnerability, because it means we live in the presence of something truly powerful.

When we learn to freedive, we learn to reconnect to our shared world. It’s humbling & healing in a society that centers humanity in our worldview, building walls of insularity to hide from our vulnerability, depriving us of connection to the life systems that sustain us physically & spiritually. Freediving humbles me to the beauty that exists outside our insularity. 🙏🏽 Learning to adapt your body to an unfamiliar environment, to tune in deeply, is one of the deepest gifts it’s given me.

⭐️ LEVEL 1 FREEDIVING COURSES ⭐️ are up for March & April ~ $375 for 2.5 days of theory, vital safety skills, & in-water training.
