The 2V and 3V threw down some strong races against quick heavyweight crews, taking 5th and 4th. Posted • Dear Friends,

We are incredibly saddened to share with the Green Lake Crew community and the broader rowing community the news that long-time GLC Head Boys Coach Ed Maxwell passed away on Sunday night. Ed coached at Green Lake from 1984-2017 and was a giant in junior rowing throughout the Pacific Northwest, nationally, and internationally. Our deepest sympathies are with Ed’s wife Karen, who also coached at Green Lake for many years, and their son Andrew.

We know how much everyone loved Ed, and we know you will keep Karen and Andrew in your hearts right now. We invite you to share your stories and photos of Ed, both on Instagram (please tag us) and on our pages (links in bio), or you may email us at [email protected]. Your stories will be shared with Ed’s family. Plans for honoring and remembering Ed are under discussion and we will share those details when we can.

“… so grateful for the program that I had the amazing opportunity to row and grow at in college.“

Posted • HOCR 2021 more than made up for missing HOCR 2020! Thank you so much to everyone for the cheering, celebrating, and the incredibly kind messages!! Winning the HOCR in the lightweight single is truly a dream come true after nearly 10 years of rowing on the Charles. Watching win in the lightweight four, having my teammates back (and run along the racecourse with me, !!), and training with one of my inspirations for continuing to row after MIT () this fall has made me so grateful for the program that I had the amazing opportunity to row and grow at in college. I’ve had an incredible summer and fall training with not only my awesome teammates but also with some of the women on the Charles that continually inspire me and it feels so special to be a rower in the Charles River community.

I can’t wait to do it all again next year! Until then, excited to see what I can get up to next 😎

(From a letter shared by Stu.)

On September 16, Stu ‘86 and Deb Schmill marked the first anniversary of the loss of their daughter Becca. Please consider helping them honor her life and memory, and give meaning to her tragic death, by reading this letter and considering taking action.

Becca’s life changed dramatically at the age of 15 when a series of traumas, including a sexual assault, turned her world upside down. She turned to drugs - first ma*****na, then stronger drugs - to try to fill the emptiness she felt inside.

When Becca was 18, she sought help in several residential substance use programs. These programs considered Becca an adult, despite the prevailing understanding that the human brain is not fully developed until age 25. This meant she shared treatment facilities with people decades older than her. In addition, as is unfortunately typical, these programs were coed, which further complicates treatment for patients who are victims of sexual assault.

Too often, teens and young adults suffering from substance use disorder do not receive the situationally and age-appropriate treatment they need and deserve. For this reason, the Becca Schmill Foundation https://www.beccaschmillfdn.org is partnering with the Boston Medical Center (BMC) Catalyst Clinic
https://www.bmc.org/catalyst-clinic to fund research to advance adolescent substance use treatment.

The Becca Schmill Foundation has set an initial fundraising goal of $94,000 for 2021 in honor of the more than 94,000 American lives lost to drug overdose in 2020. Please consider donating at the BMC - “Becca’s Gift” fundraising page http://bmc.convio.net/goto/Beccas_Gift then sharing this letter with others.

Another way you can honor Becca is by helping to stop the stigmatization of addiction. Addiction is a disease, not a moral failing. Unfortunately, too many people do not get the help they need or the treatment they deserve because of the stigma. Please help us to spread this message.

Our heartfelt appreciation for your consideration of these actions.
