VEX IQ Programming & Robotics (11-13y)
VEX IQ robotics is a middle school robotics platform that incorporates engineering concepts with programming using VEX Coding Studios. Camp will be structured around teaching the engineering process, the basics of robot design, programming, and the use of sensors. We will conclude our time with group challenges using the tools students have developed. Elements of competitive robotics will be introduced throughout this camp. Students will be paired in groups of two per robot.
Powered LEGO Machines Camp (Ages 7-9)
Using LEGO Technic kits, this class will introduce students to mechanical and structural principles that they will apply to complex builds that they can race across a room and pull to the LEGO's limits. Students will master levers, wheel and axles, pulleys, gears, and several other mechanisms to combine with structural fundamentals to build dynamic machines. Students will be coordinating individual builds in pairs of two that combine to make a sophisticated model. This camp uses mountable motors to power creations. This camp does not include programming of creations.
Lego WeDo Robotics Camp for ages 6-8 years
Using LEGO WeDo 2.0 students will discover how to make science come to life through hands-on projects. Students’ skills will be enhanced across science, engineering, and technology as they use a combination of LEGO bricks, kid-friendly software, and inspiring projects. Teams of two students will work together to develop engineering concepts where they will program and animate their creations. No prior programming experience necessary. Contact us at WallaWallaRobotics.com for availability and registration.
Coach Nicole: Nicole Butcher has a degree as a Physician Assistant and a BS in psychology. She developed a love for robotics while homeschooling her 2 boys. Her journey began in summer 2013 by starting a home school co-op robotics program in Tyler, Texas called "Venture Robotics". They had their first Lego robotics competition that same year and their club quickly grew to include K-12th grade Lego and VEX Robotics. Despite the young age of her 8 and 10-year-old sons, they took a special interest in the MS/HS VEX Robotics equipment and competitions.
For the last six years, their VEX Robotics team 8558B has competed at the high school level in 5 states with 4 Tournament Championship trophies, 4 Overall Excellence Awards, and 5 additional trophies of recognition; including the Design Award and Judges Award. Since moving to Walla Walla in 2015 their team has hosted two local VEX tournaments at WWVA, "Blue Mountain Blitz," and helped start 3 more local VEX competitive teams. Her family is excited to share their family's collective knowledge of robotics with the Walla Walla Valley by hosting summer youth camps.
Coach Cason: Cason is a high school senior at WWVA who has been involved in robotics for the last 6 years at a competitive level. Early on as a junior coach, he helped run camp logistics and coached campers with engineering and design. With his insight and experience, he is looking forward to leading others to further their robotics journey in youth summer robotics camps.
Cason also enjoys playing soccer, weight lifting, music, and photography. He will be attending California Polytechnic State University for general engineering in Fall 2021 with a goal of Engineering Management.
