RESCHEDULED to Thursday, August 29th!

Join us for an engaging opportunity to learn more from the 2024 Dr. Linda Mack Schloff research award recipient utilizing the Upper Midwest Jewish Archives at the University of Minnesota Libraries. Dr. Montrie is a Professor in the History Department at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. He is the author of five books, including Whiteness in Plain View: A History of Racial Exclusion in Minnesota. He is currently working on a new book, Modern Minstrels: ‘Blackface’ in 20th Century Minnesota.

Bring your lunch and learn more from Montrie about his current research exploring the history of ‘blackface’ minstrel show caricature during the twentieth century in Duluth, Minneapolis, and St. Paul. In particular, his research in the Upper Midwest Jewish Archives illuminates an important dimension of ‘blackface’ history in Minnesota, namely the ways White Jews participated in minstrelsy as well as how they allied with African Americans to bring it to an end.

Thursday, August 29th, Noon - 1pm
Elmer L. Andersen Library
222 21st Avenue South, Room 120
Minneapolis, MN

Co-sponsored by the Upper Midwest Jewish Archives, University of Minnesota Libraries
