Dear Parents,

Guess one of the greatest tips for building grit in your children?

Consistent participation in an extra-curricular activity for at least one year, even better 2 years.

The combination of fun and challenge that these activities present just so happens to build resilience in children.

Grit is a major value our children must imbibe to thrive in the world today.

I guess this goes to say developing other skills beyond academic excellence in our children is core to building them to overcom the challenges that will come their way as they get older.

Remember to allow them stick with one activity for at least one year, encourage them through the difficult times and help the set and hit their goals whenever they hit a roadblock in these activities.

Enjoy the rest of your day!

Recently, due to some findings, I had a conversation with a friend about the fact that the sentence "people are going through a lot" which I thought was for adults is no longer just for adults.

Right now, I can tell you categorically that "CHILDREN ARE GOING THROUGH A LOT!!!"

*The biggest thing you can do for your children today is to stay observant and keep communication lines open!!!*

I remember Mothering Sundays (as it was popularly called then) as a child. The mothers/women in their wrappers, the singing and performances by the children's church and the songs by the mothers.🎼🎹🎤

My ever quiet mum, happily sitting back and content to assist with the children, while her mum, the exact opposite, led the other women in their flamboyant white blouses, wrappers and fashion statement head ties. 👜👡👠👝👘

The excitement was palpable! My grandma, being one of the oldest, was always the host and most of the ladies in church were heading to her home right after church, just as we were, to conclude the Mother's Day celebrations. 👩‍👧‍👦🥳

It was always a three course meal party with children playing everywhere, mothers singing, greeting and serving, while the men were engrossed in a deep discussion (as usual) of all that was happening in the country.🙄😏😄

The bottom line is, mothers have always been at the center of family bonding and festivities that fan the flames of family relationships.

_Every opportunity to celebrate our great women and mothers especially is always welcome._

*Happy Mother's Day!!!*👩‍👧‍👦🤰🏻🤱🏽

Recognizing women’s achievements in science, technology, arts, leadership, and education. From Marie Curie to contemporary trailblazers, women have excelled in diverse fields.

As educators, we contribute to empowering the next generation. Let’s honor progress, acknowledge ongoing efforts for gender equality, and strive for a future where women’s success knows no bounds.

Fun fact Friday!!!!

28/02/2024

Hello Educators,

It's Wednesday again and a good time to reflect on our teaching and parenting for those of us not in the classroom.

So share with us:

*What have you done or what are you doing about your children being the kind of adult you would love to relate with and always doing their best work with whatever they have to do?*

This reminds me of Joseph in the Bible. In Potiphar's house, prison and the palace he gave his 100%.

Whatever our hands find to do, we must do it to the best of our ability and our children must know this too.

Do have a fantastic Wednesday!🌻

👉🏼 Break down the walls of your classroom (and I don't mean that literally😅).

👉🏼 Integrate real world problems/scenarios with the current trends around the world!

👉🏼 Get your students (especially upper primary and secondary) to understand how what they're doing in the classroom today would count towards the future.

👉🏼 Work on your students research and communication skills a lot through presentation. Avoid dishing out lessons and information all the time.

👉🏼 *If you're a parent, your questions during parent-teacher conferences should be changing. After you've asked about the grades, ask:*

1️⃣ How well does he/she work with others?

2️⃣ How does he/she approach challenging tasks and difficult situations?

3️⃣ What other skills or gifts have you noticed?

4️⃣ What resources and opportunities are available to help me develop them?

5️⃣ How do they lead or follow when working in a team?

We must continually check that what we are doing today gives our children a fighting chance in tomorrow's world of work.

Have an amazing week ahead.⚡️⚡️

I watched a YouTube short by where he says that, “For the first time in 500 years, humans get to be human.”

As we approach (or are already in) the fourth industrial revolution (4IR), we must continually shift the focus of our learner’s education to mirror skills required for them to thrive in the workplace of the future.

If the computers and AI have taken off most of the work we need to do with our hands and brains, then we must focus more on the one thing that is not likely that technology can ever do - we must develop the inter- and intrapersonal skills of our students. This is where SEL comes in and integrating this in our curriculums will go a long way in future-proofing our education system.

Google “future jobs that don't exist yet” for a list of some jobs that are believed will be in existence in the future.

Does any sound familiar to you or did you ever remotely think that such things would soon be relevant, let alone being full time jobs? Take full time YouTuber for instance, e don tey wey you dey gather money to japa, meanwhile full time YouTuber don reach im destination since.😅😓

See eh, I'm not trying to make fun of anybody. Get the gist!

Parents, you people are also on this table. (Maka ndi “doctor” and “lawyer”) Is there anything wrong with it? No!

But my point is, don't frustrate a child pushing them into what they have no interest in, when their interest, abilities and inclinations are so glaring.

Dear parents and educators, we need to shift our focus. Besides basic literacy and mathematical skills in the early years and lower primary stages, your child's (learner's) education must be made up of MORE!

Imagine my shock when I read an article/report that said that the same number of years of education in different parts of the world are not considered on the same level based on the quality of the education. So a year 2 child in Singapore and a year 2 child in Nigeria are up to 3 years apart in terms of problem solving and other relevant 21st century skills.

We have a long way to go!

I dey come.
