Abstract: We consider the estimation problem in a regression setting where the outcome variable is subject to nonignorable missingness and identifiability is ensured by the shadow variable approach. We propose a versatile estimation procedure where modeling of missingness mechanism is completely bypassed. We show that our estimator is easy to implement and we derive the asymptotic theory of the proposed estimator. We also investigate some alternative estimators under different scenarios. Comprehensive simulation studies are conducted to demonstrate the finite sample performance of the method. We apply the estimator to a children's mental health study to illustrate its usefulness.

Abstract: Can a principal still offer optimal dynamic contracts that are linear in end-of-period outcomes when the agent controls a process that exhibits memory? We provide a positive answer by considering a general Gaussian setting where the output dynamics are not necessarily semi-martingales or Markov processes. We introduce a rich class of principal-agent models that encompasses dynamic agency models with memory. From the mathematical point of view, we develop a methodology to deal with the possible non-Markovianity and non-semimartingality of the control problem, which can no longer be directly solved by means of the usual Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation. Our main contribution is to show that, for one-dimensional models, this setting always allows for optimal linear contracts in end-of-period observable outcomes with a deterministic optimal level of effort. In higher dimension, we show that linear contracts are still optimal when the effort cost function is radial, and we quantify the gap between linear contracts and optimal contracts for more general quadratic costs of efforts.

Marketers have been shifting away their budgets from to digital alternatives that provide more straightforward scheduling and better targeting features. In response to this trend, the television industry is developing , allowing brands to target households and schedule campaigns seamlessly.
Managers can use to increase their . One way of doing so is by timing the ’s ads relative to that of competitors. AIM Professor Guitart and his coauthors analyze how brands can accomplish this.
The team assessed how the temporal proximity and intensity of advertising around a focal brand’s ad affects its effectiveness. They analyzed data from an online product comparison company that included more than 43,000 brand and 49,000 competitor ads.
They found that ads are the most effective when they air during hours and on television stations with no competitors’ ads. When competitors’ ads air simultaneously, and on the same station, brand ads are most effective when they outnumber competitor ads. If competitor ads outnumber those of the brand, brand ads become ineffective at driving conversions to the website.
The authors show that if the company studied in their paper had followed the two previous high-effectiveness strategies, they could have generated between 55% and 59% more conversions.

How does the classical ownership structure of , involving the possibility to shut down, impact their investment policies? Prof. Benoit Chevalier-Roignant addresses this research question in a recently published co-authored work with Alain Bensoussan and Alejandro Rivera. The authors model a situation in which a site can expand its power generation capacity by an endogenous amount but may also want to shut down to save on fixed operating costs and interest payments if the market prospects deteriorate. They derive managerial implications that help us explain real-world conundrums, illustrating the intricate interactions between the to build up capacity and the to exit an industry. Shutting down may be delayed in the hope of expanding capacity upon recovery; an expansion may also be delayed in the presence of a valuable exit option. The presence of fixed or proportional financing costs may lead the firm to delay its expansion decision, but the scale of investment will only be affected by proportional costs. If causes equipment prices to increase (respectively, decrease) when electricity prices are high (respectively, low), managers should invest earlier (respectively, later) and more (respectively, less) while equipment prices are low (respectively, high). Furthermore, although volume swings (due to capacity decommissionings and expansions) are marked in a homogeneous industry (when the default and expansion thresholds are reached), heterogeneity in the population of wind farms smooths out such effects.
