What better way to engage students than to reach them through their favourite platform?

Make it fun yet they're learning something at the same time instead of scrolling mindlessly when they should be revising.

One of the divine wisdoms we are taught is the power of consistency.

Today in class, my students asked me, Mr Wyngaard, do you know you're on the internet? I wasn't sure where this conversation was going ๐Ÿง...

We did a Google search and there it was.

We came across my Facebook profile, LinkedIn and also TikTok, their favourite social media platform.

Almost all kids that have access to it...

Honestly I stopped making videos and checking my account for a few months.

I usually start around exam times as a way to boost students into study mode

I know there's no way they're just magically going to pack their phones away until after exams so I might as well find ways to engage them during their study breaks...

To encourage them and to show them I'm supporting their educational journey...

(Back to the story)
We then clicked on the link

I couldn't believe it myself...

OVER 30 MILLION VIEWS!!!

And guess what?

The kids loved it!!!

They didn't know that I actually post educational content that directly helps prepare for exams.

Or that I give tips on how to increase their grades for English...

Or that I post the different types of writing genres and their features...

Or how to independently find ways to understand topics without the help of a teacher - a SUPER IMPORTANT SKILL

It's a study hack (go to TikTok - search Mr Wyngaard - English teacher, look for the video called "study hack I wish I had in school")

All the above is done with the intention of developing a love for English in students

A few weeks ago, we had a parent-teacher meeting at school.

It's usually an exciting affair to get to know who my students' parents are.

As teachers, we give feedback and areas that need to be focused on.

I've found that building relationships with my students and their parents leads to their child's success.

Through meeting parents I've made some wonderful friends as well.

(Did I tell you about the time I was freaked out by the idea of getting root canal but then I met one of my student's parents, a world class dentist... I now like going to the dentist)

It was a great experience meeting all the parents

But then there was this one parent.

This particular parent whose daughter was struggling with Reading Comprehension.

She was understandably concerned that

She then explained to me how they moved to Egypt from another country this year and how she had a bad experience with a previous teacher...

She was visibly upset and explained to me that the previous teacher used to favour other students and on top of that...

She did the unthinkable...

She told her daughter who was struggling through no fault of her own:

"๐—›๐—ผ๐˜„ ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—ป ๐˜€๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฒ ๐—ฒ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐˜„๐—ฎ๐—ป๐˜ ๐˜๐—ผ ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐—ต ๐˜†๐—ผ๐˜‚!?"

This girl is quiet... She is exceptionally well mannered, a real example for other students.

I was shocked...

Her daughter was the quiet, shy type, the type that wouldn't raise her hand if she didn't understand something at times.

It can be daunting to admit in front of a crowd of your peers that you need help.

She asked if I could help her child and we came up with a plan of action...

During one or two of our 1st or second break last week, we sat together with a smaller group of students and

because she was figuring out how to answer technical reading questions that stumped her before...

She was NOW SHOWING ME how to find the answers in the Reading comprehension.

There was an instant difference in her.

She knew she could do it

She was confident in her own abilities...

She was smiling as she was zipping through the answers...

Back in class, during lessons she was raising her hand to answer questions...

When we graded her practice exam... there was a marked increase in her achievement...

Even better - she was more willing to join in on discussions and asking questions when she wasn't sure about something.

All it took was some encouragement and the right method of finding the answers to bring out that spark in her!

First he laughed at what's possible...Then he couldn't believe it's him...

A few years ago, I was introduced to a concerned mother regarding her son's school performance and general approach to school.

When he was younger, he was a typical 12 year old 'man'

Nobody could tell him better.

He had it all figured out although his grades didn't reflect the same but he had potential

He didn't take middle school seriously

He didn't do homework regularly

He used to skip class at times

He would get into fights

He was popular among his peers

He wouldn't dare to do his best because it wouldn't be cool to get straight A's

He got into trouble all the time, not because he was a bad person - trouble seemed to be attracted to him

BUT WOW! This student had huge potential...

He couldn't see it.
He didn't believe he had it in him to do better.

His mom could see it, his dad could see it
(He came from an amazing family and had great parents)

I could DEFINITELY see his potential

He was resigned to the thought that he probably wasn't going to do well in school so he might as well ride on his popularity.

He just made it through each year, then around year 9 or 10, he realised it's either work hard or flip burgers...

He wasn't much of a burger flipper

I may not be great at long division and Algebra - I haven't used it once in real life anyway, but who's counting? - but man, I can motivate the hell out of a class of students.

So, his mother gave me a call and enquired with me about me giving him Life Coaching but with a focus on Academics. This was exclusive coaching, no private English tuition program.

She was concerned that in Year 10 he will need to decide which field he wants to go into and he wanted to be a doctor LOL - more about that later...

We discussed the requirements to get him to the next level.

It started with his mindset.

No matter who the life coach is that you hire, no matter how many great teachers you hire, if the student does not want to change, he or she will never get results.

He genuinely realised it's time for a change...

So, we:

1. Did a DISC test to see his personality type - it's amazingly accurate to see what type of personality traits you fall under. He found out he had many leadership qualities... He showed these signs earlier on.

2. We did a Wheel of life exercise where we go over areas of life: Where he is now VS Where he wants to be in X amount of time

3. Discussed his top 3 goals:
A - short term goal
B - Medium term goal
C - Long term goal

4. We mapped out a plan of how to achieve those goals.

He understood that I can't change a thing about himself. It was up to him.

I gave him the tools and guided him, held him accountable for his actions...

Slowly, week by week he started implementing and taking action.

He started hitting his goals.

After a few months, there was a big change in his attitude.

His grades started to improve

His self confidence went through the roof, he couldn't believe it at first...

He started leading by example at school (the same teenager that used to get into fights a while back)

He started helping other students in class and became the go-to person for help before exams among his peers

He started studying out his own without his mom or I reminding him during our coaching sessions

Then...

He came third place in his grade

Then

Achieved some of the highest grades in class...

Guess who's laughing with confidence and going to apply for medical school???

Get your child into a proper sleeping routine so that their bodies get used to shutting down at a certain time.

Before covid my kids used to be asleep by 7pm, the same way I was brought up. It takes time and may be done later in the evening according to age.

I remember once I couldnโ€™t sleep and the next day at work I was feeling rather out of it. I bought a Redbull for schoolโ€ฆ next thing I knew, I was racing with the students during break (True Story)

The child was my ideal client:
* Someone who stuggles abit with their English reading and writing but has an amazing go-getter attitude (this makes all the difference)

* Always showed up on time for our online sessions

* Her mother would regularly keep in contact with me regarding her child's progress

* Implemented everything I taught her to improve her reading

I couldn't download the work.

My dog ate my printer

I had tennis training so I couldn't do the homework

They were paying for the time and experience I invested in myself over the last 15 years.

From middle of the class to top 3.

Send me a DM and I will send you a link to my scheduling app to book a call to see how we can get your child's grades and attitude to the next level.

"Give me your eyes"
by Mariam

I remember back when I was a student, some lessons were captivating and we couldn't get enough of it.

It was really something that motivated me as a student.

Other lessons on the hand, can be as boring as watching pain dry...

Have you ever watched paint dry? Now like that yes...

I remember in math, I used to sit in the back of the class in high school.

I would sit in the back of the class, put 2 chairs together and lay down because I knew this was going to be one of those paint drying experiences.

Aaaaaaand... The teacher wasn't exactly captivating for me.

I absolutely disliked math because in my mind it just didn't 'click'
(...yet - this is a story for another time of how everything in math finally 'clicked')

I use this personal experience as motivation whenever I step into the classroom

I adapt my lessons to make sure the lessons are fun and engaging

Sometimes too engaging

As an English teacher, I have the task of helping students develop their own creativity and immerse them in lessons.

Some teachers use videos as a starter, others ask questions to access previous knowledge

I tell stories... Spine tingling stories

The writing topic we did was Suspense / Horror genre writing and what better way than to put on a short scary story for kids.

So, we turned off the lights, closed the blinds to prevent extra sunlight from entering the classroom and watched the video.

I always tell students to pay attention to the elements that make a story successful:

* Such as the sounds being used... Onomatopoeia
* How the characters are described
* How suspense is built throughout the story etc

Towards the end, students felt a cold shiver down their spine.

There weren't monsters or anything, just great storytelling and pauses at the right moment

Students LOVED the lesson and when they actually did their writing, it was amaaaaaazing.

I remember my student, Mariam wrote a story called 'Give me your eyes'
It's as creepy as it sounds...

She aced her English Checkpoint exams the end of the year by scoring a perfect 6 (90% and above - Aโญ)

The day she almost left school at year 3 to get a job

Life isnโ€™t all victories and going smoothly all the time; itโ€™s filled with losses, failures, and mistakes.

I tell my girls, โ€œin life, you're not always going to get your way youโ€™re going to lose, youโ€™re going to fail, youโ€™re going to make errors, it's all a test.โ€

Haneen, my youngest one didn't do too well in a spelling test, she's 8 years old.

She got 6 out of 10 and her life as she knew it was over...

She couldnt look at herself in the mirror because alas... 6 out of 10

She was even looking on job sites to see if McDonald's is taking on 8 year olds with 10 to 15 years experience...

But hereโ€™s the kicker โ€“ itโ€™s not about the how many times you fail; itโ€™s about how you learn from our failures and push forward

She sure as hell pushed forward...

The next time around she got 18 out of 20, she proved to herself that it could be done with proper effort and a game plan.

We as parents and teachers should them to get up, practice harder, find solutions, and approach adversity with a resilient and positive outlook and mindset.

Instead of dwelling on what went wrong, we place our focus doing better and putting in more effort it the next time around.

By developing our child's mindset like this, we nurture resilience.

We need to lead by example and develop our children to become mentally strong to be able to face life's challenges that will inevitably come there way so that they can face them head on and come back even stronger

You'll never make it as a teacher, you're not good enough..

Years ago, I attended a conference with people from all over the world in Cape Town, South Africa.

I was still young and filled with ambition.

One of the speakers, a highly influential HR manager from the Middle East who also happened to be the host, asked each person at the round table:

"What do you want to do with your life?"

When it came to my turn, I was excited and proudly told the group, "I want to be an English teacher and make a difference in students' lives!"

Immediately, the host said, .

"You will never make it; you don't have what it takes to be a good English teacher.
You don't have the people skills or the personality for it."

My heart sank...

I felt like I wanted the Earth to swallow me.

My friends tapped me on the back and said, "Ignore him; he doesn't know what he's talking about."

At that moment, in my mind, I looked at him and thought of words that rhyme with 'Duck Flew' for that 'HR Manager.'

That was the day, about 18 years ago, that I made a promise to myself that I will become the best teacher any of my students will ever meet and now I have the track record to prove it.

Fast forward to today.

I currently teach at an international school in Cairo, Egypt.

I serve as the Head of Year 6.

I have successfully taught over 2000 students from all over the world, including Egypt, Jordan, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Qatar, Germany, Sudan, USA, Korea, South Africa and China.

Many of my students have achieved above-average results, with many of them reaching the coveted '6 for English Checkpoint' (that's like an A+ pass for an international level exam which is Outstanding because they're native Arabic speakers)

Don't let others devalue your self worth

For parents who have children who struggle with writing...

There's a common misconception with students and parents that writing is extremely hard and difficult to master, I'm here to change that misconception

Years ago, I had a student named Rawan, she was about 10 or 11 at the time in year 6.

She was very hard working and she did fairly well in Reading comprehension

BUT... Like many other students, she struggled with writing.

Especially fictional writing as well as coming up with proper sentence structure in her stories.

She felt she wasn't really coming up with eye catching content.

Content to make the reader want to read further...

Although a shy person at the time, she came one day to me and asked me, "Mr Wyngaard, how can I improve my writing and increase my writing grades?"

I gave her a 3 step process in order to level up her writing skills

A week or 2 later, I was marking her writing and I was BLOWN AWAY!

I thought she cheated or maybe had someone write it for her. I then called her aside and asked her to explain.

At first she was shocked๐Ÿ˜ฒ

And then she told me in a now shy defensive voice, I did exactly what you told me,
Step 1.
I started reading regularly every day and started using some of the sentences in the text and used it in my writing

2. I took some of the Powerful Vocabulary within the text and made them my own version and rewrote them to suit my story

3. I applied the VCOP writing system you taught us

I then told her show me the book, it was Percy Jackson or Dork Diaries and showed me the sentences she used as her inspiration...

I was sooooo excited that I read it out to the whole class.

We call it a WAGOLL in teaching
What A Good One Looks Like
(Refers to a student writing that is SO GOOD! we use it to encourage others)

This method is super effective because it makes the task seem easily attainable and makes students feel that they can also do it

She was beaming with excitement and I was super proud of her increase in her confidence and how she owned her writing skills.

Everyone clapped for Rawan.
A few weeks later, she was one of the top, most creative writers in Year 6.

It all came down to this simple 3 step framework that starts with reading regularly and applying what you read.

If you want a full explanation pdf on how your child can do this, comment 'writing made easy' and if there's enough feedback, I will put it together and send it over

As a teen, I wasn't the most engaged student because I was sort of the class clown type of student.

There were some amazing teachers that absolutely mesmerized me during lessons and then there were those less than exciting lessons I had to endure. It all boiled down to how they engaged us as students and how they presented the lesson.

Nowadays we have to find new ways to capture our students attention in a way they can relate. For example, using technology as a platform to teach.

As a teacher, we constantly have to keep up to date with technology and try to find innovative ways to engage our students.

At the moment I am testing out some of the resources used for learning and at the same time I am also practising my skills. If we don't keep practising, we tend to forget rules.

I am a specialist English teacher with over 10 years of teaching experience. I am a native English speaker and I've taught over 1500 students with exemplary results.

I have a passion for working with ambitious students who believe in themselves and want to take their results to the next level.

I combine the latest technology coupled with academic coaching to develop the ultimate teaching experience for my students with a results focused program.

I cannot work with all students privately as they need to be ambitious and show extreme dedication in order to work with me as I need a certain level of commitment so that we can work together to bring out the best they can be.

My academic program includes:
* Baseline test to check your child's level of understanding of:
a) Reading Comprehension
b) Grammar and punctuation
c) Writing
* Custom developed curriculum suited to your child's needs
* IXL membership account for your child

* Academic coaching program and resources which includes:
a) Success Principles for teens book
b) Goal setting session
c) Accountability sessions
d) Study schedule planning

* Access to premium British National Curriculum resources

..and most importantly...

* 1 on 1 Private English Lessons with a Cambridge qualified English native English Speaker.
If your child fits the criteria, they will undergo a baseline test, thereafter, if he/she shows a certain level of aptitude, I will develop a specialized curriculum suited to your child's abilities and needs. we will then work on your child's goals as well as hold accountability to reach those goals.

As you may notice, this is not an average private lesson, this is a full Academic program which requires an investment in your child's future.

The Best Gift you can give your child is the gift of a great education.

(Please note, this offer is not available to students of my own school as it's against school policy)
