Florida lawmakers want to authorize study of mushrooms, M**A as alternative therapies 07/12/2021

A psychedelic revolution might sound suggestive of 1960s hippie culture, but some people — notably, a recently retired Republican sheriff — predict that's what the 2020s will bring in medicine

The search for treatment of common mental health disorders, including depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder, has led researchers to hallucinogenics, which have shown promise when used in clinical, strategic ways.

Two proposed companion bills in the state Legislature would, if passed, direct the Florida Department of Health and and the Board of Medicine to study the therapeutic efficacy of three "alternative therapies," M**A, psilocybin (the substance found in "magic mushrooms") and ketamine.

The Florida bills' language is identical to a bill passed in Texas earlier this year, said Rep. Michael Grieco, the House sponsor.

A similar bill was signed into law this year in Connecticut, while Oregon has approved the use of psychedelics in supervised, clinical settings beginning in 2023.

At the start of this year, Grieco, a Miami Beach Democrat, filed a very different, 48-page bill taking note of what has happened in Oregon and elsewhere and "trying to sound the alarm that Florida needs to start taking this seriously." The bill didn't get a Senate sponsor or go anywhere in the 2021 session, but it did attract a lot of media attention.

Terpene-Mediated Modulation of Cannabinoid Activity | Cannabis Sciences 06/12/2021

A popular theory – the “entourage effect” – has been gaining traction amongst the cannabis sciences community in recent years.

The entourage effect is a hypothesized phenomenon in which different combinations of phytocannabinoids (such as Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol, THC; and cannabidiol, CBD) and terpenes (such as β-caryophyllene and β-myrcene) interact to generate unique, synergistic effects that are distinct from the effect of either compound alone.

However, experimental evidence supporting the entourage effect has been relatively limited within the field thus far. Notably, the in vivo physiological effects of these proposed interactions in both therapeutic and recreational contexts remains vastly understudied.

Of the two phytochemical families, cannabinoids have received more attention in functional and medical research investigations. Terpenes, on the other hand, have yet to be studied so extensively.

VA Is 'Very Closely' Following Psychedelics Research For Veterans With PTSD, Official Tells Lawmakers - Ma*****na Moment 04/12/2021

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is “very closely” following research into the potential therapeutic benefits of psychedelics like **A for military veterans, an official said at a recent congressional hearing.

At the meeting before the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee late last month, Rep. Colin Allred (D-TX) asked for a status update on research into the use of psychedelics for the treatment of among veterans.

The meeting wasn’t focused on rather, it centered on veteran su***de prevention and innovative approaches to combat the issue. Allred said there were “pretty good results” from earlier research into how psychedelics like M**A might help mitigate the struggles of veterans, and VA’s Lisa Brenner replied that the department was aware of such studies.

“We’re also watching very, very closely—both clinicians, and the [VA] Office of Research is watching very closely,” she said. “Not only that, we do have researchers that are connected to the VA that are working on some of these projects with their affiliates.”

“We are tracking very closely. There are currently some trials underway, and we’re eagerly anticipating the results from those well-designed trials,” Brenner said. “Once we are able to see the results from those well-designed trials, then we will be able to begin to think about what would be next steps in terms of any modifications necessary or what next steps within VA would be, but along with you we will continue to watch closely.”

Oregon law to decriminalize all drugs goes into effect, offering addicts rehab instead of prison 02/02/2021

“One of the things people misunderstand is how criminalization creates barriers to treatment,” says Kassandra Frederique, the executive director of the Drug Policy Alliance, a national nonprofit dedicated to legalizing illicit drug use. “If we want people to make different choices, we have to give them more options ... ending criminalization will do leaps and bounds around ending shame, which automatically opens people up for other opportunities.”
