Students did a great job identifying parts of speech in this week's Mentor Sentence! They even went above and beyond and found some examples of alliteration. This was a great sentence to study, from our very favorite book!

Congratulations, Rebecca, for being our Student of the Week! Rebecca earned this week's award for listening with understanding and empathy, keep up the good work!
Most students finished up robotic Lego task in the Makerspace today! Students created flood gates to go with their learning about erosion.
We had a funky week, so no newsletter in folders today! Here's a sneak peek of our visit with the Johnson fire department. Also, congratulations to Bailey, our new Student of the Week. She has done a great job showing self-control in our classroom!
Bailey brought in a special share related to our science learning. Thank you, Bailey, for sharing examples of land and water from Johnson! We furthured our learning by discovering that water doesn't just flow across the land, it makes changes as it goes! We enacted the erosion caused by rivers breaking down rocks as they travel down mountains. By the time the rocks reach the ocean, they've become sand!
Here are some belated pictures of our buddy reading with Ms. Newberg's class!
Another afternoon spent studying how water moved across the land. Our mountains showed some obvious rivers once the rain hit. We learned that all rivers eventually flow to the ocean, but also that rivers find the low ground, the cracks and crevasses in the land!
We created model watersheds today. Each group designed their own landforms, then a rainstorm came through and we got to see how the water moved across the land and where it naturally settled.
We started learning about non standard measurement this afternoon! Lots of fun measuring with unifix cubes.
Book orders are going home tomorrow. You can also order online. Orders are due next Friday, September 27.

Mrs. Stender was absent today. Instead of cancelling library, we explored the new Lego wall and K'nex bin during our library time!
Our new math unit is pushing us into much larger numbers. We spent math class today exploring place value and numbers over 100 by counting beans from my classroom jar. In doing so, we learned a lot about the digits that make up numbers, and how their value changes based on their place in a number. We also got the opportunity to do lots of skip counting by 2s 10s, and 100s. All in all, we counted 647 beans!
Congratulations to Mahkia! She earned our first Student of the Week award for showing perseverance in the classroom! Mahkia recently injured her wrist, but is continuing to push herself to do her best, even while learning to write with her non-dominant hand! She received her award at our first second grade team meeting, where students from both classes got together to persevere through a team-building challenge, getting a hula hoop to travel around our circle without unlinking hands.
We've been so busy reading, writing, and jumping into math that I haven't even had time to take pictures! Students were excited to learn how to log into their new Chromebooks this week, and did their first fact practice on Reflex math today. Tomorrow is Library day, so please remember to send in any books you have at home!
We are finally setting into our daily routine. We created an "inspiration wall" of all the places we can get writing inspiration and kept increasing our reading stamina. By the end of the week we'll be reading independently for over half an hour at a time! This afternoon, we started looking at data in math. A glyph is a way to represent data through pictures. Check out our "beetle glyphs" that represent data about it classroom!
Have an excellent four-day weekend. The kids were really excited to share their learning with you today, so I'm attaching lots of pictures! We explored the school's new makerspace, and can't wait to get a chance to use it. We also started exploring symmetry with some math manipulatives. Finally, students applied for classroom jobs. It was great to see some of you at the school barbecue! See you next week!
We had an extra busy day today! Our self portraits and future dreams went up, we finalized our class rules, and signed our seating contracts! Be looking for copies of these in folders tomorrow.
Another busy day in second grade! We had a special visitor from Black Dirt Farm visit out classroom to teach us about composting, then we practiced with our snack scraps. We finished our community puzzle, started to explore the books in our library, and started thinking about math by sharing number facts about ourselves! Many of you have already filled out permissions page with the front office, thank you! Here are a few snapshots of our first two days.
We had a great first day! The kids had a blast practicing our new sensory paths, and worked together to put together a community puzzle they helped to create. At the end of the day, our all-school community meeting got a visit from the Johnson Jaguar! Tomorrow we will work hard to start earning Jaguar jewels to earn our first all school celebration. I can't wait to see you all tomorrow!
Welcome to our class page! This page is a place where you can check for regular updates about what we are doing in our classroom. I'm so happy to have you all join me this year!
