WHAT IS EID UL ADHA?
Description: Following the example of Prophet Abraham and having complete trust in God.
The twelfth month of the Islamic calendar is called Dhul Hijjah. It is the month that contains one of the greatest pillars of Islam – Hajj or the major pilgrimage. It also contains one of only two Islamic reoccurring festivals, Eid ul Adha. These two special occasions, the Hajj and Eid ul Adha, are inextricably linked by one special man, Prophet Ibrahim, known in Jewish and Christian traditions as Prophet Abraham.
Making the pilgrimage is often called following in the footsteps of Ibrahim. This is due to the fact that the rituals involved in the pilgrimage replicate many of the events in Prophet Ibrahim’s life. Eid ul Adha commemorates a specific trial in the life of Ibrahim. He was commanded by God to sacrifice, his son Ishmael. Eid ul Adha occurs on the 10th day of Dhul Hijjah, the day on which most of the Hajj rites have been preformed and the pilgrims slaughter an animal to honour Prophet Ibrahim’s obedience to God.
“Surely Ibrahim was an example, obedient to God, by nature upright, and he was not of the polytheists. He was grateful for Our bounties. We chose him and guided him unto a right path. We gave him good in this world, and in the next he will most surely be among the righteous.” (Quran 16:120-121)
In a divinely inspired dream, Ibrahim saw himself sacrificing his son Ishmael. All members of Ibrahim’s family demonstrated complete trust in God, therefore Ibrahim revealed the dream to Ishmael. He readily agreed that his father must carry out the command of God. Together they went to the place of sacrifice and offered Ishmael’s life to God. Ibrahim prepared to sacrifice his beloved son. At this point the shaytaan (satan) tempted Ibrahim trying to make him disobey God, but Ibrahim resisted and drove the shaytaan away. Ibrahim looked down at his son for what he believed was the last time but as the blade came close to Ishmael’s neck God stayed his hand and revealed that there was no need for Ibrahim to continue. His sacrifice had already been fulfilled.
Giving up something big for the sake of God, such as the life of your child, must seem like a huge and unimaginable sacrifice. Today even going without something small, such as a cup of coffee, to donate the money to charity seems like a large sacrifice. Try to imagine how Ibrahim must have felt as he held the blade above his child’s neck. In the last moment he was relieved of his duty to follow God’s commands. Having complete trust in God, knowing with certainty that God knows and wants what is best for us is often difficult, but it should not be.
“…And whosoever fears God and keeps his duty to Him, He will make a way for him to get out (from every difficulty). And He will provide him from (sources) he never could imagine….” (Quran 65:2-3)
God replaced Ishmael with a sheep and it is for this reason that Muslims sacrifice an animal on the celebration of Eid ul Adha; however it is more than a celebration, it is a reminder. We are reminded of our own submission to the will of God. Those Muslim’s who are not making the pilgrimage and who can afford it sacrifice an animal in remembrance of Prophet Ibrahim’s test.
“Their meat will not reach Allah, nor will their blood, but what reaches Him is piety from you….” (Quran 22:37)
The act of animal sacrifice is often misunderstood. God has no need for the blood or the meat; in fact God has no need for any of our acts of worship. However for our own benefit God commands us to turn to Him and obey Him. God looks for our piety, our goodness and our charity. The animal sacrificed is usually a sheep, a goat or a cow.
Distributing the meat from the sacrifice of Eid al-Adha strengthens many of our efforts to please God with our piety. Usually, a portion is eaten by the immediate family and relatives, a portion is given away to friends and neighbours and a portion is donated to the poor. The act symbolizes our willingness to give up our bounties to strengthen ties of kinship and friendship and our enthusiasm to give up things that are of benefit to us in order to help those who are in need. In the sacrifice we recognize that all blessings come from God.
Eid ul Adha commences on the 10th day of Dhul Hijjah. For those who are not at the pilgrimage, it begins with an extra early morning prayer performed in congregation, called the Eid prayer. It is a time of celebration, a time to visit family and friends and thank God for all the blessings He has bestowed upon us. It demands contact with relatives, kindness to family and neighbours, and empathy and compassion for the poor. Above all Eid ul Adha reminds us that God is great and that He is the source of all bounties. Through the good times and the trying times God is the source of all comfort and all peace, and submission to Him brings the greatest benefits of all.

Individual responsibility: Every human, and no one else, will bear the consequences of their actions, good or evil, during this life journey. Their time, knowledge, wealth, and strength are the most important assets of which they should make the best use for the benefit of themselves and others. On Judgement Day, every individual will be asked by God how they spent each of these.

Men and Women in Islam
Equal souls: Islam affirms that God created men and women
as equal beings; equally valuable in His Sight, equally subject
to His Sovereignty, equally deserving of His Mercy and
Protection, and equally accountable to Him for their deeds.
Both are born innocent and free from sin, capable alike of
receiving guidance and knowledge; capable alike of
developing their intellectual and moral powers to the
highest levels or degrading them to the lowest levels; and
capable alike of obeying or disobeying God and doing good
or evil.
Establishing this fact, without exalting one above another,
the Noble Qur’an says:
"O mankind, fear your Lord Who created you from a single
soul (Adam), and from it He created its mate (Adam’s wife,
Eve), and from them both He spread (through the earth)
many men and women." [QUR'AN 4:1]

Any burdens, confessions, or needs should be poured out, in private to God without mediators, for He is the Sole Source of Support and Strength:
Prophet Muhammad (PBBUH) taught saying:
- “Ask Allah of His Bounty. Truly, Allah (Exalted be He) loves to be asked.” (Sunnan At-Tirmidhy)
- “Let each of you ask his Lord for everything that he needs, even a lace for his shoe when it breaks.” (Sunnan At-Tirmidhy)
- “If only you rely on Allah with due reliance, He will provide you with sustenance as He provides birds. They go forth hungry in the morning and return satisfied in the afternoon.” (Sunnan At-Tirmidhy)
- “Any servant who says every morning and evening, ‘In the name of Allah with Whose Name nothing on earth or in heaven can cause harm, and He is the All-Hearing, All-Knowing’ nothing will harm them.” (Sunnan At-Tirmidhy)
- “Shall I teach you a word which is one of the treasures of Paradise: There is neither might nor power except with Allah.” (Sahih Al-Bukhary)

Prophet Muhammad (PBBUH) said: "Your smiling in the face of your brother is charity for you; enjoining good and forbidding evil is charity; guiding a man in a misleading land is charity for you; seeing for (helping) a weak-eyed person is charity for you; removing a rock, or a thorn, or a bone from the road is charity for you; and pouring out from your bucket into the bucket of your brother is charity for you. Conciliating between two persons fairly is charity; helping a man ride upon his mount, or load his luggage upon it is charity; a good word is charity; and every step that you take to (offer) prayer is charity."
This is the simple yet profound philosophy of mercifulness of this greatly merciful Messenger (PBBUH). Mercy is not just a virtue. Mercy with him transcends far above mere moral excellence or righteousness, making of every merciful deed a devout act of worship that certainly pleases Allah (Exalted be He) and helps us draw near Him and, ultimately, win His Mercy.

Connection with ALLAH
For anything in this universe to be built, Allah has decreed that it should have a foundation on which its structure can rest.
The stronger the foundation, the stronger and safer the building
will be. Any structural damage or defect can cause the whole
building to collapse one day.
• Salah (prayer) is the cornerstone of Islam and its second pillar. A person’s Islam is incomplete unless they perform Salah.
• Salah derives from the Arabic word Silah, which means connection, because it connects the humans with their Maker and draws them closer to His Mercy. Salah, therefore, is your private contact and communication with the Originator of life and the Creator of everything—Allah. He, the Exalted, has enjoined it upon you to bring you closer to Him daily.
• Salah in Islam is the foundation; when performed regularly, it
positively influences and transforms every thought, attitude, and
action. Allah says in His Noble Book: “…and establish Salah.
Indeed, Salah prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the
remembrance of Allah is greater.” (Qur’an 29:45) In other words,
maintaining regular communication with Allah provides you with
guidance and success, fills you with strength and peace, and
protects you from deviation and ruin.

God is there
“With Him are the keys of the Unseen; none knows them but He. He knows whatever is in land and sea. Not a leaf falls, but He knows it. Not a grain in the darkness of the earth, not a thing, fresh or withered, but it is written in a Clear Record.” (Qur’an 6:59)
You are not more difficult to see than a black ant, scampering over a black rock, under the cover of the darkest of moonless nights.
What is inside you is not harder to know than every single leaf that changes color and falls off every autumn tree.
God sees you, hears you, and knows what is hidden so deep within you that it may still be a mystery to you.
He can distinguish your quiet, whispering voice from the voices of billions of others. The bustling of marketplace shouts and arguments do not drown you out. The roaring of stormy oceans does not drown you out. Your voice does not crackle or get cut off when you are calling out to Him. This is not a long-distance phone call.
Your suffering is not unknown to Him. Your anger is not unknown to Him. That which you have suppressed and controlled within you is not unknown to Him. The truth of everything, though you may be hiding it from everyone else, is not unknown to Him.
There is never a moment when His Seeing, Hearing, or Knowledge fail.
Why then do you seek to solely be seen or heard or understood by His creation whose seeing, hearing and knowledge fail all the time?
Everyone is hiding something. And if all that is hidden is only known to Him, it must follow that true contentment and true ease and true peace can only be sought at His door.

Achievements:
During this short period of his 23 years of prophethood, Prophet Muhammad (PBBUH) changed the entire Arabian Peninsula from paganism and idolatry to the worship of God alone; from tribalism and ceaseless civil wars to solidarity, justice, and equality; from
drunkenness and debauchery to sobriety and piety; from
licentiousness and anarchy to moral goodness, lawfulness,
and order. Human history has never known such a revolution
in human thought and behavior that brought about an entire
transformation of a people or a place in just over two
decades.
