A huge thank you to Commonwealth Transfusion Foundation (CTF) for providing this generous scholarship grant to the Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) program at RUC. This is the fourth year in a row that CTF has assisted our students as they work to complete the B.S. in MLS. CTF is a valuable partner in our efforts to recruit and prepare the next generation of laboratory scientists. The Radford University MLS Program has 100% job placement since 2010 and our graduates are providing quality healthcare to patients in our region and the commonwealth of Virginia. Additionally, one of our graduates is about to complete the CTF SBB Program to attain her specialist certification in blood banking/transfusion medicine, which will enhance her skills and allow her to perform more complex testing in transfusion medicine. We are proud of our graduates and grateful to CTF for the support they provide.

What a good looking crew!! Professor Link hung out with some of our amazing friends from the office during Radford University Night at Party in Elmwood Park. We couldn't do what we do without the help of Mark, D'Aundre, and Brian ❤️
Our next summer endeavor is next week! Love sharing our profession with the next generation of healthcare!
We are so excited to welcome students this Sunday to Summer Bridge 2024! Over the next week they will engage in River Research, Rockets and Robots, Molecules and Medicine, Medical Laboratory Science, Internet of things cybersecurity, and so much more!
It will be an exciting week of fun and STEM experiences. We will share more about the program each day.
We had a great time hanging out with these future healthcare leaders!
Professors Angelini and McBride, along with RHEC Site Coordinator Trisha Calhoun and interim Associate Provost of RUC Glen Mayhew, represented Radford University Carilion at the Go Red for Women in STEM executive breakfast. Held this morning at the Hotel Roanoke, RUC joined other sponsors of the Go Red for Women in STEM event that took place earlier this month.

Still floating on cloud 9 after all the graduation festivities this weekend!! 🎓
We were so pleased to be able to bring back the tradition of pinning our graduates, thanks to the Commonwealth Transfusion Foundation. We were also blessed to have a representative of CTF, Susan Dewberry, join us for our festivities, so she could see firsthand the pride and joy our graduates had when receiving their pins.
We've been super fortunate to work with the Commonwealth Transfusion Foundation over the last few years to bring our transfusion medicine simulation laboratory to life and provide amazing educational experiences for our students. These specially designed pins were the cherry on top for our graduates!
We can't thank CTF enough for their continued support!

The aptly named "Team #1" took the gold in their match up against "Dos" in our second round of the MLS Olympics! It's such a joy to witness our students working together to puzzle through these obstacles. It's especially fun to over hear them repeating memory devices and phrases their instructors have given them over the course of the year 😜
Great work everyone!
The first round of the MLS Olympics saw the Streakers5000 take home the gold medals! Order of the draw relay race, micro media madness, and more had these two teams racing to complete events focused on their medical laboratory training.
Today is one of our favorite days of the whole school year: review day! Packed with fun review games, our seniors have to test their knowledge to win! We had too much fun to be contained in one post.... Stay tuned!
It's amazing to see how wonderfully creative these 20 beautiful humans can be! PVC and pool noodle models of the esophagus, infographics and brochures, board games, pipe cleaner flowers, pin the vaccine on the cow, and roadmaps to make intricate healthcare issues relatable.
We're so proud of these soon to be graduates!!
We wrapped up lab week with one of our favorite events of the year: senior capstone projects! Clinical cohort students presented on topics pertinent to healthcare and the clinical laboratory in a forum open to the university community. We had so much fun, it couldn't be contained in one post!
Can you hear Professor Angelini's voice in your head?
Lab Week Fact of the Day: Mycobacterium leprae, which can infect humans and armadillos, went through a period of reductive evolution in which it lost much of its genome. The cause of leprosy, it is the only known bacterium that infects Schwann cells (which help separate and insulate nerve cells) of peripheral nerves.
Thanks to the hard work and dedication of ASCLS-VA, the RUC MLS class of 2024, and MLS faculty member Jennifer McBride, official proclamations of Medical Laboratory Professionals Week 2024 were made by Virginia Governor Glen Youngkin, Roanoke City Mayor Sherman Lea Sr., and Radford Mayor David Horton. Program Director Laura Link was presented the proclamation from Governor Youngkin at the 2024 ASCLS-VA meeting by the organization's president, Dr. Barbara Kraj.

Lab Week Fact of the Day: Pseudomonas edition!
Pseudomonas spp. are known to laboratorians to possess a grape-like or corn chip-like odor. Pet owners sometimes observe that their dogs’ feet smell like corn chips because it is fairly common for a dog’s external microbiome to include Pseudomonas spp.!

Yesterday, the fungus was among us! Our seniors had a great time with some more of our clinical partners practicing their fungal identification skills to punctuate our unit on mycology.
We had fun yesterday "scoping out" parasites with some microbiology friends visiting from one of our clinical affiliates! Our clinical partners really are the best and we couldn't do it without them!
