Wednesday 4th December -12pm PST (1.5 hour class) - Unlearning Perfectionism in the Voice Studio - Megan Durham and Christina Kent

Free to members.
Non members tickets available $38 link in bio.

Unexamined perfectionism can be one of the most detrimental factors in a singers progress. If we experience this pain as a singer, it is also likely that we encounter it as a teacher. How might our own perfectionism impact how we guide singers, run our studios, and navigate teaching challenges?

In this workshop, we will define and explore perfectionism and its impact on our relationship with both performing and music by: dismantling the harmful elements of the master-apprentice teaching model; unlearning perfectionism through somatic, mindfulness, and sound practices; applying mindful presence and non-violent communication to support ourselves and singers.

Christina holds a Master’s in Music and Opera Performance from UBC in
Vancouver, British Columbia. She has been an active concert soloist and has
performed with the Vancouver Opera and Pacific Opera Victoria chorus.
Additionally, Christina regularly collaborates with her musical partner, Matt Stern,
as part of a folk duo.

A firm believer that singing is about storytelling and connection, Christina infuses
these values into her work as both teacher and founder of Mindful Sound Studio,
a voice studio focused on holistic, trauma-informed singing
instruction. Drawing from her meditation teacher training and personal practice,
she integrates mindfulness and somatic practices into her work with singers.

Megan, serves on the voice faculty at the University of Louisville and works as a singing voice specialist. Incorporating trauma-informed care into her pedagogy, she is a facilitator of YogaVoice®, LifeForce Yoga®, Transcending Sexual Trauma Through Yoga, and Movement For Trauma (Jane Clapp). She serves on the BOD for the Voice and Trauma Research and Connection Group. Megan holds a Master of Music degree in voice pedagogy and performance from Westminster Choir College of Rider University. She's a Recognized Vocologist with the PAVA and certified in voice habilitation at the Chicago Centre for Professional Voice.

Congratulations to VIP Authorized Instructors ,Sandro Leon, Steff Fish, Yuri Hirose, Taylor Crawford and Michelle V Ornest, who have successfully completed our recent Advanced Course, an Introduction to Vocal Distortions, presented by Aliki Katriou.

We were delighted with the feedback we received for the course and the continued dedication of our Authorized Instructors to their professional and personal development.

Sandro told us, “This course has enriched my pedagogical approach, allowing me to conduct a more detailed analysis in the teaching of vocal distortions with my students. The course structure has been simple but highly effective, facilitating the integration of new techniques into my professional practice as a voice teacher.”

Yuri said, “Each assignment gave me the opportunity to experiment with my voice on a deeper level, allowing me to discover new sensations in my voice, and I've been able to produce some of them. Now I realize which distortions I'm good at and which I struggle with. Thank you so much for providing us with practical and experiment-based lessons!

Steff relayed “I really enjoyed this course. It was really interesting to get Aliki's perspective on the ever expanding and constantly contradictory field of vocal distortion. It is always helpful to get different perspectives, as well as some new ideas on how to approach these sounds with students.

Taylor said, "I loved this experience. I love it when the status quo is challenged, and I felt this subject in particular expanded my thinking and attitudes around the status quo for teaching voice. I felt it brought a lot of clarity to what was a mystical subject for me, and the framework is so so helpful to address this topic in my studio."

We will have more graduates to announce soon, as they complete the final tasks for assessment.
