A few moments of Lea's experience
My name is Lía Xin Pérez Barrera. I am 18 years old and I live in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. I am a student of industrial and automatic electronic engineering at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
When I decided to become a part of the ESC (European Solidarity Corps), a wide range of possibilities and experiences opened up. I chose to apply for the short-term project due to my personal situation, as I am currently a student. After applying for various projects that aligned with my preferences, I received responses from several organizations.
Ultimately, I decided to join this project because it seemed to be the best fit for me, offering an opportunity to develop my skills and contribute to a cause. This experience has been a journey of personal and professional discovery, which will undoubtedly benefit me in the future.
It has provided me with the tools to explore numerous possibilities, get to know a new country, its people, and its culture, and interact with volunteers from various countries, allowing for the exchange of knowledge.
I conducted this project in Romania, in a village called Ghermanesti, which is part of the Snagov commune. The project entailed organizing a summer camp for the local community, where various activities were conducted with the children from the village. We focused on different aspects to ensure that the children learned in a playful and enjoyable manner.
During my free time, I took the opportunity to visit significant places in this country with the other volunteers. I wholeheartedly recommend this experience because it offers an opportunity for self-discovery, the exploration of new horizons, and personal development.
In 2022, I was allowed to spend some months in beautiful Tenerife, as a volunteer at HECANSA with the help of the European Solidarity Corps ESC. Without any doubt, I can say – It was the best time of my life! I met incredible people and had amazing experiences. Not a single day, I was in a bad mood. Carol, Helena, Carlos, Isabel and the rest of the teacher's crew were including me in their team from day one. The students were the most pleasant ones I could ever imagine, making giving German classes great fun! Also they were cooking the most delicious meals every day!! I was so lucky to create strong and lasting friendships with students and teachers throughout the school, and of course with my Co-volunteers Jules, Manuel and Fernando.
It showed me, that there IS indeed a place where you can feel happy and grateful every day and a workplace that you actually jump out of the bed for.
Almost needless, to describe the beauty of this island with so many facets that reach from the Teide volcano over Anaga to traditional villages and beaches like in paradise. It's overwhelming, how much there is to see and at least we tried, to discover it all.
Thank you Kristina, for electing me. Thank you Carolina for being the best mentor and friend I could ever imagine. Thank you Jules, Manuel, Fernando, Helena, Ari, Julieta and so many more (please feel included) for making my time as incredible as it was.
I know it sounds so perfectly kitschy, but that's what it was like. If you ever get the chance to go to Tenerife and Hecansa, go for it!

Conocí a gente increíble y viví experiencias inolvidables.

🇪🇺 Last Tuesday, May 9th, was Europe’s Day. Many people around Europe were celebrating the date when the official idea of the European Union started.
On May 9th, 1950, French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman published a declaration, later known under his name, the Schuman Declaration, to secure peace and unity inside Europe. 🕊️
We, at the Hotel Escuela Santa Cruz, remember this event by pinning ribbons in Europe’s colors on our clothes. Also, in different classes, we held a quiz competition about essential facts and contexts of the EU. The winners received a prize from Europedirect Canarias, whom we greatly thank with this message. 💙
