Honeypot Ants | 1 Minute Animals

Also known as honeypot ants or repletes, are normal ant species that have adopted a special strategy to survive when there is a lack of sustenance. They store food in their bodies to feed their colony members during times of scarcity. They are found in arid regions of North and South America, Australia, and Africa. It's a perfect strategy to survive in bad times.

NEW PUBLICATION ALERT! 🚨🚨🚨

Hot off the press is a new publication describing a new species of fish named 𝘐𝘯𝘪𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘶𝘴 𝘣𝘢𝘬𝘶𝘯𝘢𝘸𝘢, or the eclipse-spot razor wrasse. This study was led by Kent Sorgon of the University of the Philippines - Los Baños, along with Yi-Kai Tea of the Australian Museum, Cleto Nañola Jr. of the University of the Philippines - Mindanao, and Jasmin Meren of the National Museum of the Philippines’s Zoology Division.

The eclipse-spot razor wrasse was described from several specimens including the holotype collected from an unassuming public market in Loay, Bohol. For some time, locals have long been familiar with this previously unclassified fish and at some point have made it a staple in their meals! This brings to light the importance of research such as taxonomy in helping us understand our environment and manage our natural resources, because all too often, such animals have been part of the culture of a certain area, yet remain overlooked and undescribed as they live in poorly-studied environments.

This newfound species is named after the Bakunawa, a serpentine beast from Visayan mythology that is believed to be the cause of eclipses by devouring the moon or the sun. The epithet alludes to the large concentric black and white ellipsoid ocellus on the rearmost part of their dorsal fin that resembles an eclipse. The white margin fades in preservatives. Kinda like the fleeting nature of eclipses, right?
