MHIRC commemorates the arrival of revered Arab-Malay missionary, Shariff Mohammad Kabunsuan, who introduced the Islamic faith on the indigenous communities of mainland Mindanao around 16th century. His legacy not only reflects common past, but also the shared heritage and identity of the Muslims and the Bangsamoro region.

A certain level of ethnocentricity is rational, to ensure survival of oneโ€™s culture, by promoting and defending cultural values. However, when ethnocentrism grows to racism and discrimination, it becomes a barrier to intercultural communication. Cultural sensitivity entails a balance between ethnocentricity and respect for other cultures. The individualโ€™s ability to develop emotion toward understanding and appreciating cultural differences promotes appropriate and effective behavior in intercultural communication (Chen & Starosta, 2000).

Catch MIPSA's Episode 2 of ๐—œ๐—ฃ๐—”๐——๐—จ๐—ก๐—š๐—ข๐—š ๐—ฉ๐—ผ๐—ฑ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐˜€๐˜ on ๐——๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ง๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐˜€ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—–๐˜‚๐—น๐˜๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—ฆ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜€๐—ถ๐˜๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ถ๐˜๐˜†, featuring our very own, Coordinator for Indigenous Knowledge of MHIRC, Dr. Jay Rey G. Indigenous students' success, wellbeing, and retention depend on the school culture being culturally sensitive and needs-oriented. This is the aim in which we must all participate.

During the 2024 Org Fair in MSU-IIT, 89% of students who participated in an exploratory survey said they knew very little to nothing about Mindanao's indigenous peoples; while specifically, 74% reported having a Low to Moderate Level of Awareness of the presence of indigenous students (non-Moro IPs/Lumad) at the University.

Something extremely concerning.

Taking on this challenge, MIPSA attempts to enhance visibility, encourage community, and calls for a conscious effort to support and empower Indigenous students in the University.

In line with MIPSAโ€™s Key Development Area on student awareness and cultural education, we bring you the first episode of IPadungog: Discussions on IP Tribes in Mindanao.

By doing this, we want to raise awareness among the public about the indigenous peoples and we implore to increase or sustain their count in the University.

MHIRC joins the country in the celebration of the 2024 Indigenous Peoples Month and the 27th Commemoration of the Indigenous Peoplesโ€™ Rights Act of 1997.

We recognize the invaluable contributions of our Indigenous Cultural Communities in the protection of the environment and their ancestral domains, nation-building, and heritage preservation.

Reiterating the words of NCIP, there is a need to instill an IP-centered collaboration among duty-bearers and partner stakeholders to uphold the narratives, rights, representation, and well-being of IPs across the country.

To sustain the existing partnership, MHIRC yet again explores entry points for collaboration with the Dulangan Unified Ancestral Domain of Opol, Misamis Oriental, through its designated Indigenous Peoples Mandatory Representative (IPMR), Datu Lumalambong Jeffrey P. Puasan.

In a courtesy visit, MHIRC has also given the opportunity to propose activities with the new NCIP Regional Director, Mr. Fundador S. Binahon Jr., who is equally receptive to the idea of indigenizing research methodologies and approaches for IP community engagement in the academe.

MHIRC is also grateful in receiving the NCIPโ€™s Epanaw (which means Journey) set of three Coffee Table Books (CTBs).

The first coffee table book, โ€œPagkilalaโ€ (Recognize), showcases the profiles of each ICC/IP. It contains information about their history, location, and overview of their social and daily lives.

The second coffee table book, โ€œPaggalangโ€ (Respect), features festivals and rituals that the ICCs/IPs practice in relation to important events such as birth and death, agricultural cycle, and the sacred and profane.

While the third coffee table book, Pagtaguyod (Promote), contains travel destinations in ancestral domains for eco-tourism. The promotion of these sites will not only generate livelihood but also highlight the significance of protecting and asserting the rights of indigenous peoples groups to their ancestral domains.
