How to use retrieval practice to improve your grades

As part of the Knowledge Translation Internship that she completed with us last summer, Emma Dias created the infographic below on how you can learn more effectively and improve your grades using retrieval practice. Past research shows that retrieving information from memory improves one’s ability to access and retain this information over time.

How to use retrieval practice:
1. Prepare - gather course materials
2. Get familiar - familiarize yourself with your notes
3. Test yourself - use a testing tool after each study session
4. Repeat - do these study-test sessions on a regular basis
5. Reap the benefits of your learning and exam scores improving!

Using retrieval practice as a study strategy!

As part of the knowledge translation internship that she completed with us this past summer, Nicole Vendrame created the infographic below about how to study effectively using retrieval practice. Retrieving information from memory helps us retain this information better compared to other more passive study strategies (e.g., repeatedly re-reading the information) - this is referred to as the testing effect.

How to enhance your learning with the testing effect:
1. Try using cue cards to test yourself and/or your peers.
2. Pay attention to the difficulty level of tests - make sure that it isn’t too easy or hard.
3. Try testing yourself in different ways.
4. Team up with a buddy.
5. Make sure to check whether your answers are correct and/or ask for corrective feedback.

Check out our second new “Research Action Cards” that looks at how homework can help enhance student learning!

We found that:
- Students’ homework grades were predictive of both their test and exam performance
- Students’ in-class assignments grades were predictive of their test performance (but not their performance on the final exam)

What students can do:
- Review feedback received
- Thoroughly understand feedback
- Reflect on feedback
- Put feedback into action

What educators can do:
- Provide feedback in a timely manner
- Ensure feedback is detailed
- Be clear and supportive
- Provide clarification and elaboration

Check out one of our new “Research Action Cards” that looks at how participation helps student success in a course!

We found that:
- Student’s level of participation was predictive of their grade on the final cumulative exam.
- Attendance had no influence on students’ final exam scores when their level of participation was accounted for.

What students can do:
- Participate in class activities
- Minimize distractions
- Choose your seat wisely

What educators can do:
- Give students multiple forms of engagement opportunities
- Create a safe and welcoming glass environment
- Find different ways to motivate students
